Yup, it needs to go. Unfortunately Rep Ross has had a supreme power to make bills die in committee in the last couple of years. With any luck, she will be removed from her position in about 4 weeks and we can get some real work done.

  2. Gunmart Says:

They also have a going armed to the terror of the public clause which could potentially be a big problem for CCWs

Since I live in the beknighted Land of the Long Leaf Pine, I’d like to chime in.

There are a lot of dumb things in NC concealed carry law; this is only one of them. You also can’t take your gun into any venue where admission is charged, or to a funeral. There’s also that “duty to retreat” thing once the thugs have broken into your house. As it was taught in my CCW class, it’s fine and dandy to shoot them in the act of breaking in, but once they’re inside, you get to back up. Teh Stoopid–It Burnz.

As far as the “going armed to the terror of the public”, I do wish people would bother to read up on that. Start with the AG’s yearly treatise on NC firearms law, available at http://www.ncdoj.com/Files/About-DOJ/Law-Enforcement-Liaison/2007-NC-Firearms-gun-Laws.aspx Find Page 24, then #6.

Every cop I’ve ever talked to has said, while having the gun openly may get you stopped and questioned, unless you’re actually doing something untoward with it, or simply act like a jerk to the cop, you’re going to be in the clear–cautioned at worst. YMMV in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, Greensboro and Charlotte areas due to a large population of immigrant gun-haters.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
