90% Myth Makes News

FoxNews dispels the myth that 90% of Mexican crime guns come from the US:

There’s just one problem with the 90 percent “statistic” and it’s a big one:

It’s just not true.

In fact, it’s not even close. By all accounts, it’s probably around 17 percent.

What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told FOXNews.com, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

FoxNews: Telling you today what bloggers told you last week. Though I must give them credit in that they actually said so. I don’t know of another news outlet that has.

The BATF aint no different than the Mexican drug cartels. It’s a criminal organization.

  2. Mad Saint Jack Says:

I have been wondering if and how the BATFE can trace a gun that has never entered the US.

Would it be correct to say that 100% of guns traced by the ATF come from the US because that’s all that they can trace???

  3. Kellene Says:

Better late than never, I suppose…

  4. chris Says:

so will Greta and Geraldo come on the air an apologize for their blatant lies over the last few weeks that said the exact opposite?

  5. TXGunGeek Says:

Well, just to prove they don’t care about the truth, the senate passed a bill yesterday authorizing Millions more $ for increased weapons enforcement on the border.

bitterly clinging to their lies and legislation.

  6. Jake Says:

Fox may be trying to expose the myth, but it looks like the AP is just lying harder to compensate. From this story:

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recently reported that up to 95 percent of guns seized at scenes of drug violence in Mexico can be traced to U.S. commercial sources. [emphasis added]

    Gotta love the “Authorized Journalists.”

  7. TexasFred Says:

If it weren’t for lies and deception the BATF and the Obama administration would have nothing… Nothing…

  8. Nylarthotep Says:

Well, at least Yon put this up on his blog.

Not that it matters greatly, since he’s already managed to blame us gun fanatics for the problem without actually doing any work.

  9. K-Romulus Says:

The spin is already starting. This AM (4/3) on NPR Morning addition, there was yet another “guns to Mexico” story. The reporter mentioned the Fox News story without giving ANY details of the debunking. The immediate follow-up was reporting that Holder was asked at a press conference about the Fox News “challenge” to the administration’s meme.

Holder’s replayed response:”It doesn’t matter if it is 60 or 70 or 80%. There are still too many guns going to Mexico.”

There it is folks. Right to our faces.

Here is a link to the NPR story by Jason Beubien:

  11. Ken Says:

Yon also tossed out a “some are questioning the veracity of Fox’s story” in this morning’s dispatch.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
