Machine Gun Fail

The barrel is probably a quick change and probably wasn’t locked in after the last cleaning.

What is disturbing is the the soldier did not clear the round that was (probably) chambered, nor did he unload or secure the weapon before he let go of it. With or without the barrel, a round can still come out of the upper….

(unless the whole thing was staged)

  2. Eagle 1 Says:

This is a couple years old. Some folks were saying it shows the poor quality of our weapons, blah, blah, blah. If it isn’t staged it was the ID-10T failure of the armorer or operator who put it together after cleaning it. Failure to lock and time the barrel.

M2HB’s have “uppers” now? Who knew?

  4. Tam Says:

(PS: No. Without the barrel, you have no chamber…)

  5. Lyle Says:

Thank you, Tam. I’m not entirely familiar with the M2, having only fired one once, but I was wondering about that.

Anything mechanical can and will fail. That the M2 is still our primary heavy MG (having been around since what, 1918?) says a lot about its reliability, methinks.

If you look through the rest of the fail videos the jumping jack fail is pretty darn funny. That and the bowling celebration. And the guy knocking himself out with a log. And the guy on the bike running into the sign.

M2 barrels screw in against a detent that makes clicking sounds. You screw it in quite a ways and check the headspace with a spacer that is usually provided, though they can, like any small tool, be lost. Spacers come on a keychain with another much smaller piece of metal which is used to set timing. I guess you could set one up to fall out by just barely screwing it in…I never thought about it. I can’t figure what makes it fall out. It LOOKS like it fires a single shot and knocks it loose. Could be the sound on the video just doesn’t register it. (and probably so)
Nobody hurt I guess, but sheesh…..not something I would screw with even as a joke.
I don’t think it breaks, it’s just not put together.

By the way- there haven’t been any M2s made since the end of WWII. There were so many in the arsenal that we are still using the old ones. They do get reconditioned and get new barrels all the time, but the block and the receivers are earlier than 1946. They evidently had a hell of a lot of them. The last time I shot 50 cal at Ft Hood in Barrett rifles they sent out 1946 and 1949 St Louis arsenal ammo in 30 shot tins. We were shooting up the end of the ammo from WWII!

  9. B Smith Says:

Who the hell would ‘stage’ something as dangerous as a .50 cal failure? Just the thought of that is disturbing (though I’ve heard of things just as stupid.)

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
