Here in Austin, TX, we aren’t quite to the ridiculous standard of “carbon neutral,” but the local city council has enacted tree protections such that one no longer owns the trees on one’s property. They essentially belong to the city, after they get bigger than about 8″ across. The city can deny permission to remove trees, can demand remediation in new plantings for every diameter inch of tree permitted to be removed, and can even fine you up to about $800 per inch of tree diameter removed without a city permit.
Can you say “government taking of preoprety without just compensation” because I do every time I deal with the tree people as I try to build new houses for our burgeoning population.
Carbon neutral: I’m guessing that construction of a metal shed with concrete flooring and iron girders instead of wooden framing won’t count as carbon neutral, right?
