Carbine can be pronounced both ways, one comes directly from France and the other has been filtered through England first.

John Garand pronounced his name that way. But it has been pronounced the other way for as long as the gun has been in use.

    Lop-wah.
    Lah Pooh Ah.

I’ll likely never have a chance to mispronounce it in reference to anything I’m shooting, but if ever I do, I’m gonna.

He’s wrong in two places. Go find a video by Bob Geissele on YouTube, and listen to him pronounce his own name with 3 syllables. Why he went to all the trouble with the umlaut in Lüger, but not Shönauer, I don’t know, but the sound is a lot closer to “shane” than it is to “shown” — it’s a long “O”, but with the lips rounded and tongue forward, giving it more of a long-A tone. Seeing Luger spelled with the umlaut is pretty rare, and I doubt we’ll hear the end of “Looger” any time soon. Just don’t try to hail an über.

English is already a mixed up mess of spelling and pronunciation. We don’t need the extra burder of all these furrin’ werdz.

    “Lop-wah” = WTAF?……

Did they drink the bong-water again?

  6. Ryan Says:

One that I’ve never gotten was Hornady. I hear people say horn-aw-day. Seems off to me.

  7. tincankilla Says:

“Kokh”? is he trying to say “cock” but getting squeamish?

  8. jed Says:

@tincankilla: the “ch” in Koch is a glottal, not a hard “k” sound. I guess the “h” in Kokh is trying to signify that.

  9. Critter Says:

    Kosh?

    Cock?

    Coke?

Dude should really just change his name.

  10. Melvin Says:

Back during my Navy flying days, we called the parachute and seat pan attach points our torso harness “Coke fittings”.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
