Is the NRA in trouble?

Looks like internal squabbling is causing some issues. And there’s potential the state of New York could shut them down.

Yep. That ain’t the half of it.

And; they have a pension system?

It is axiomatic that any organization ceases to have as its primary mission the reasons it ostensibly was formed, just as soon as it has a board, and a hierarchy. In other words; mission drift begins the second the group is considered established, if not before. I’ve seen this on the small town orginization level, in local schools, and in small business, and it must be orders of magnitude worse in this case.

I’m guessing the NRA could do better with volunteers only, but they also have the much more difficult position of being subject to guaranteed enemy infiltration. Extreme screening would be paramount.

If the rest of the organization is run as well as Competitions Division, we’re in deep doo-doo.

“All culture-war all the time” is bigger trouble.

I mean, they’re making me rethink being a life member, and that’s … not easy?

The NRA is not immune to Pournelle’s Iron Law of Bureaucracy. I generally support them but they’re clueless and unprepared when the gun control du jour appears.

The Trace has an expose about the NRA’s financial mismanagement. Essentially the top executives are a “good-ol-boy” network that pays themselves handsomely through relationships with outside vendors. The volunteers and line level employees, meanwhile, are working their assess off to cover the bills and hardly getting paid.

It’s a long read, but very illustrative.

What I said there is what I’ve said before:

Internal strife, corruption, self-dealing, mis- mal- and non-feasance of its membership’s best interest, and under attack by government that is even more corrupt than the organization itself is. What does that sound like to you?

Yeah, NRA is a union and all that that implies. It is hurling headlong with both barrels blazing (heh) toward the same irrelevance and oblivion as Teamsters et al. Can it be saved? Only by burning it down and building anew.

  7. Ron W Says:

I have been a member of the NRA, but not now. Something I really dislike is that they pretend they are the only organization which defends the RKBA. I’m a member of Gun Owners of America and my State organization, Tennessee Firearms Association, both Constitutionalist ones which support all of the Bill of Rights.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
