But in the US Virgin Islands, the governor has signed an executive order stating the National Guard can seize guns and ammo in case it needs them. If they did that, it would definitely be a safe space for looters. This is, of course, illegal.
The NRA is threatening legal action. It should.

Horsepucky! The NG would have no use for civilian firearms. Just the logistics (ammo supply, parts) would make it impractical. This is nothing more than the asshole Governor opening the way for a gun grab. And I’ll bet that he’ll order it when the next emergency hits “for public safety”.
I should hope that local National Guard will refuse to do any such thing and that they know that they are not required under the UCMJ to follow orders that are illegal and/or immoral. And something like this is both.

Just once, ONCE, the National Guard shoots a bunch of college students, some of whom did not deserve shooting, and nobody will EVER let them forget it! Nobody ever complains about the Guard shooting Detroit rioters the same damn year!
I will point out that since that time, the National Guard has NOT shot college students or anyone else something like THOUSANDS of times during disaster deployments.

Publius, you’re full of smelly brown stuff. you’re basically claiming that ALL Military personnel are thugs, liberal bullshit! I served in the California Army National Guard from 1987-1992 and I’m sure that I know a helluva lot more about the Guard than you do by a damn sight.
My Battalion was deployed to Lib Angeles for the Rodney King riots in ’92. we were given orders to shoot looters which we TO A MAN, stated that we would not obey that order as it was immoral. I have no doubt that all Military personnel, Regular and National Guard would react the same way to any similar order.
At Kent State the rioters were attacking the Guardsmen, who felt that their lives were in danger and reacted as anyone would, they defended themselves.

What’s immoral about shooting looters? I say it’s immoral not to shoot them. What is immoral, however is disarming law abiding citizens as police and National Guard did during Katrina. Try that kind of thing with me and the people in my community you’ll be confiscating the lead first.

Um, you do realize, mikee, that the US Military is one of the few organizations still in existence that has committed genocides and ethnic cleansing. Yes, it was a long time ago, and no one alive then is still alive, but if we are comparing institutional history, the US Military’s past isn’t exactly stellar.
