More open carry

Massad Ayoob:

Some open carry advocates hope for test cases to go to courts and validate their cause. I wouldn’t be betting on that outcome. When someone’s behavior is sufficiently frightening that the school in question goes to lockdown, I don’t expect the courts to say that’s just fine.

    Dear Mr. Ayoob,

Please stop issuing your “legal opinion” on how we will lose in court for doing normal things.

    Sincerely,

Millions of modern gun owners and rights activists.

Does Massad Ayoob realize that schools have gone on lockdown over literally nothing? Schools have literally gone on lockdown because someone a “weapon” poking out of backpack, only to find out after much hullabaloo that it was an umbrella.

  3. JTC Says:

“…normal things.” If that nimrod is the new normal then the gunnie community is well and truly fucked up.

    And that wasn’t no umbrella.

Mr. Ayoob, keep doing what you’re doing; the real normal gunnies are right there with you regarding the terribly counter-productive attention whoring of some of these OC activists.

    Renegade_Azzy,

Marching back and forth in front of a school with a rifle at port arms is a normal, everyday thing?

Wearing a black trench coat and carrying a magazine-in, bolt-forward firearm *at low ready* into a state legislature is a normal, everyday thing?

Having a rifle at low ready or sul on a tac sling while ordering a burrito at Chipotle’s or buying a bag of Oreos at Target is a normal, everyday thing?

If a guy in a black trench coat strides into your daughter’s school, your place of business, or your church/synagogue with a grim expression on his face and a rifle in both hands at low ready, are you going to go to condition orange and start evaluating cover and angles, or are you going to shrug and say “ah, he’s just a normal everyday guy” and turn your back on him?

There is a difference between non-ostentatious open carry of a holstered pistol as you go about your daily tasks, and dressing up like a cosplayer in order to get a rise out of people.

Like Mr. Ayoob said, open carrying in in-your-face ways is like people trying to defend smoker’s rights by blowing smoke in people’s faces. It isn’t just unhelpful, it is actively giving aid and support to the prohibitionists.

    Yes. Ever heard of ROTC?

That being said, I agree that ready-carry in businesses is more or less open douchbaggery.

  6. dustydog Says:

Interesting parallel: taking Ayoob’s paragraph out of context from the rest of his post makes it seem more extreme.

Out of a proper context, OC seems extreme and alarming.

    For your consideration:
example 1) a buff dude wearing nothing but a speedo – fine at the local pool. Not fine at your toddler’s ballet class.

example 2) a jeep full of boisterous teenagers with crowbars and work gloves – fine waiting for a Habitat for Humanity meeting to start. Not fine parked outside your house, waiting for you to leave for work.

  7. Gunnutmegger Says:

Open carriers are attention whores who are handing the anti-gun zealots the ammunition they need to enact more gun control and paint gun owners as dangerous and untrustworthy.

That’s the fact. Your whiny junior high school debate logic convinces no one who hasn’t already gorged themselves on your bile-flavored Kool-Aid.

    Get off my side, idiots.

  8. Lyle Says:

You have to concede that using the metric of “other people freaking out” as the means of determining right ad wrong is not necessarily a good thing.

Woman with exposed neck and ankles = whore
Black man walking hand in hand with a white woman = criminal

Yes, context is everything, AND we’re all acting like a bunch of frightened, fussy old ladies.

  9. Gunnutmegger Says:

The recent CT assault weapons ban was written long before Sandy Hook, and was sitting in a democrat legislator’s desk waiting for a tragedy to happen so that it could be rammed down our throats.

There are no laws to ban women’s ankles sitting in the desk drawers of American legislators. And you know that.

Why are you clowns commenting here? Aren’t you supposed to be recording yourselves instigating police stops by open carrying to “protect my rights”?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
