Snow daze

With the kids out of school due to icemageddon, we had a lot of down time. And the kids got bored. So, I was showing them things to do with cards, like building a house of cards, throwing cards, and tossing cards into a hat. After a couple of attempts at house building that ended in collapse, my son went and got tape to put them together. Then, I showed them tossing cards into a box. My daughter tried it. But my son grabbed the entire deck and tossed all the cards right in the box.

At first, I was disappointed he was cheating. Then I realized it was also pretty smart.

He is a little rules lawyer.

My wife and I have called our four year old a “little lawyer” so many times that lawyer has become his favorite insult.

You might think about putting together a bail fund for him. I set $500 aside for our son and let him know that was limit. Over that and you stay. I also told him that when he hit 21, whatever was left was his. Incentive program. When he hit 21 he had forgotten about it and asked me what the $500 was for. A kid that smart might need special handling.

Hey, I’m an engineer. I represent that remark. Senātus Populusque Rōmānus, are you perhaps referring to that old Avalon Hill hex game? That and similar consumed many hours of my time in high school.

    Smart kid.

My six year old had to dress like a character in a book in order to avoid her school uniform this morning. She picked casual lay-about clothes. When mom protested and started to explain the rules, the kid picked up a book, found a two-bit support character and said, “I’m dressing like her. She dresses like a real person.”

Neither mom nor the school protested. I slipped her an extra cookie for twisting the rules to her advantage, and told her the same.

@Glenn: I like the idea of the bail fund, but living in gun-control country I will exempt them from non-violent gun offenses.

ASL is now published by MMP rather than the defunct Avalon Hill, but yes.

Within the Denver Mad Scientists Club, there is an honorary title that the membership can award you for exemplary actions called “Reason For Rules”.

My favorite example of this was when an official water fight was announced to be held at a summer picnic and the initial rule was that there would be no rules, one fellow announced he would be bringing a bucket of ice cubes and a wrist rocket. It was quickly decided that there would be rules.

Several of us hold that honor.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
