Want! Unfortunately, the TSA droid at the gate might want too. And any fool could rationalize how you could bring down a plane with it. They can have my nail-clippers, but this would be too much.

This is what innovation looks like… that feeling of uncertainly between “Is that cool” or “Is that stupid”?
I can’t tell how I feel yet, but if I was in a situation where my choice was one of those, or no tools at all, I’d want one pretty bad.

Do not want. What Mike said above (comment #6). I’m not uncertain, that is stupid. IMHO, YMMV, etc.
Also, haven’t had a Leatherman since Tim Leatherman’s comments during the Bush/Kerry race. I carry a Victorinox knife, and their multitool.
Drawbacks: shorter pliers, much less of a “needle nose” which is bad on occasion, scissors have the standard, buggy Victorinox spring mechanism.
Plusses: Much better bottle opener, and I like the locking mechanism a lot more. Screwdrivers are moderately better.

It seems to be pretty cool, but “cool” rarely gets the job done effectively. And since I don’t like to wear stuff on my wrist, especially something made out of metal…

I used to like Leatherman multitools until the brouhaha about his comments. Then, after seeing this post, I decided it was high time I actually try to see some direct evidence instead of just relying on word of mouth witnessing. Just back from finding a complete, original response to the controversy from Tim Leatherman. It seems he simply said Kerry was who he was voting for. No real endorsement (that is, everyone should vote Kerry), no corporate donations, no personal donations, just that Tim was going to personally vote for John.
Well, that’s bad judgement and just as bad judgement to announce who you are voting for publicly, but I find it hard to hold a single vote against another citizen. I’m going to have to rethink my avoidance of Leatherman products.
Going to campaign stops, making commercials for your candidate, donating money, press conferences, those are all things that could put a person clearly on the other side of the fence from me. But just how a person is going to vote seems a lesser sin.

I must have gotten caught up in the heat of the moment, I could swear Leatherman had some nasty comments for people who thought Bush was less bad than Kerry. Looking now, I cannot find any. And I’ve looked at forums like arfcom where they certainly would have mentioned it.
My statements on the relative merits of the tools stand, I do prefer the Victorinox for everyday use. But it appears you are correct on the brouhaha.
