Stupid hurts

12 year old decides to hold a lighter to a 22LR to see what would happen. Well, I guess he found out.

    Good. Better than killing someone.

  2. Critter Says:

he almost *did* put his eye out…

  3. Nylarthotep Says:

I recall something similar when I was in High School. Kid decided to bang on a .22LR with a rock to make it go bang. I believe he ended up with the slug in the brain. Didn’t kill him, but he was never quite right after that.

Layers of editorial oversight; Nice headline. I didn’t know you could get 22 LR with “exploding bullets”. Trying to teach a journalist the difference between a cartridge and a bullet is like, well, trying to teach a journalist the difference between a cartridge and a bullet.

We did that lots of times when I was kid, except that we weren’t so mind-bogglingly stupid as to do it up close and in the hands like that. Wow.

It was apparently a regular prank at hunting camp (among some friends of my brother’s) to toss a 30-06 cartridge in the campfire. That’s a signal to get away, you see. No one was ever injured, so far as I know. Common sense says you don’t stick around, looking closely into the fire to see what happens (’cause you already know what’s going to happen, see).

Now it’s a freaking news item? Apparently there’s nothing else going on in the whole, wide world, then.

The news here of course is that something like that is considered news. “Boy plays with fire, and things that go bang!” Gee, ya think?

Guy I used to know, his son found a box of .38spl, put one in his mouth, and tried to light it like a cigarette. Fortunately someone caught him at that, but I reckon having Darwin as an inspiration will catch up with him sooner or later.

  6. Sean D Sorrentino Says:

Little shit! Doesn’t he know how hard it is to get .22 right now? That’s pure waste!

  7. Jeffersonian Says:

    !SCIENCE!
It was a vise, hammer and punch for me.

    !SCIENCE!

  8. TigerStripe Says:

A kid in my neighborhood did something similar when I was young. He shot the primer on a shotgun shell with his bb gun. He hit the primer, the shell went off, sending the primer into his forearm where it remained.

  9. Crotalus Says:

Stupid should hurt. That’s how some people learn. The problem is, sometimes, stupid kills.

  10. mikee Says:

    Sean, my reaction exactly.

Dayton has so much 22LR that it ends up lying around where stupid kids can pick it up off the floor for free?!

I remember when Sportsman’s Warehouse used to stack the 550 round milk cartons of Winnie White Box and Rem Golden Bullet and Federal Crud-Maker 22LR up like cordwood in 3’x3’x3′ mounds of low cost fun, and I still have unused boxes from those glorious days of yesteryear, but I sure haven’t seen any recently.

  11. Windy Wilson Says:

Lyle, putting a bullet in the forge in metal shop in school was apparently a well known prank 60 years ago, too, if Bill Cosby is any authority.

  12. Goober Says:

Keep one thing in mind – a cartridge exploded outside of the barrel of a firearm is likely to be nothing but so much brass shrapnel.

Not deadly in the slightest, outside of some remarkable event.

THe bullet more or less goes no where, since it is heavier than the case. The case gets all the momentum, and blows to hot little bits with no real energy behind them.

You’ll get scarred up a bit. If you close your hand around it, you may lose some fingers (probably not from a .22, though). But the idea that you can actually get “shot” by a bullet fired from a heated, unchambered case is pretty much bogus.

That this made the news at all is silly. My friends and I called doing stupid shit like this “tuesday morning”. The one that was REALLY stupid was the pipe bomb made out of iron pipe and those white phosphorus strobe thingies you get for the 4th of july.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
