NRA Presser

Caught bits and pieces on the radio. Here’s the transcript. Said there shouldn’t be more gun control but we should have armed police at schools. I agree with the former but not so much the latter. Not one of Wayne’s best speeches.

Coverage here.

Tam was not impressed.

Some schools already have an armed police presence. I don’t think there should be a policeman in every school, but I think the broad topic could be looked at closer.

How about appointing school marshals? Similar to an air marshal, there would be at least one school employee (teacher, principal, office employee) properly trained and allowed to carry a concealed handgun during school operating hours. Similar to the air marshal, the school marshal(s) would remain anonymous. This factor alone, could deter individuals from making a school their prime target.

  2. bob Says:

This sounds like TSA in the schools. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the idea of children being taught that a police state is normal in a “free” society.

  3. markofafreeman Says:

At least they left open the possibility of citizen volunteers. And at least they didn’t fold like a cheap lawn chair.

LaPierre has a long history of opposing guns in schools. At least this time he came out of the gate blasting the mythical Gun Free Zones.

Still not a fan of the NRA, but still a life member, and this doesn’t give me cause to call them and give them an ear-full and resign my membership.

  4. Pyrotek85 Says:

Have they said how he got in the school in the first place? They reported they had a secure door used to buzz people in, but supposedly he was refused entry and forced his way inside somehow.

  5. Standard Mischief Says:

    Pyrotek85,

One of the major news sources claimed he shot his way in. Seeing how awfully wrong they got everything within the first 24 hours, you can take that anyway you want.

  6. Monty Says:

There is a strong demand for actions, the NRA is smart to propose a course of action that doesn’t negatively impact the rights of gun owners. The more alternatives being pushed for, the easier it is for wavering reps to stand firm on gun rights in favor of one of the other choices. Without those choices it would be harder to defend gun rights.

  7. wizardpc Says:

The “secure” door was full glass. Not bullet resistant.

  8. Pyrotek85 Says:

    @Standard Mischief
    @wizardpc

If that’s correct maybe they could start with a proper door then, as that’s little better than a ‘gun-free zone’ sign.

  9. Sigivald Says:

And the only thing I saw on the internet [ie Facebook] about it is “crazy-stupid NRA blames videogames for murder”.

Proving that people who don’t want to read past a cheap headline won’t.

I’ve long since given up trying to talk to them about such things, since they want to remain stuck in a feedback loop of “progressive news”.

  10. tincan Says:

I watched it live and considered it a disaster, mostly because it did nothing to convince the convincible, nor did it use logic to defeat all the emotionalizing in the media, nor did it convince me that the NRA is interested in actually dealing with the issue in a reasonable way. of course, codepink helpfully demonstrated that determined individuals can overcome intense security preparations…

  11. Ron W Says:

What was even crazier was Bloomberg saying that the idea of armed guards for schools is irrational when government officials (like him) are in buildings protected by armed guards.

  12. HiddenHills Says:

SO.. What is the solution ? If nuns can break into a nuclear facility, it is no surprise a determined lunatic can get into a school.

  13. Mike E Says:

In the aircraft industry, when there is an accident, the aircraft companies send out their own investigation team to determine what the facts truely are. That way there are multiple points of view to resolve what the truth really was. The DOT has their opinion and the company has thiers. I’m not suggesting this would be possible every time a hang fire happened, but at least in a bigger case like this, another set of eyes would be welcome to oppose the liberal media.

  14. Cargosquid Says:

And, of course, the media is in full outrage, as the “defiant” NRA (as I heard on the TV) refused to take any responsibility.

  15. rickn8or Says:

Anybody heard/seen any firm numbers on the police response time?

“If we can protect our money and our buildings with guns, why can’t we protect our children??

  16. Jeff from DC Says:

Rick-it doesn’t matter. Response time in of itself is just that…a response. The police are by design a reactionary force. I think this speech was as dated as myspace, but he’s right. Only a force on force situation ( or the potential for one) would have stopped this at the time.

Just saw the NBC shill actors “do something” anti-gun ad. In contrast to the record gun sales and lobbying by the gun community, I am baffled that the liberal media and mayors from cities with the strictist restrictions and highest crime rates still think they can convince us that “the majority” of the country wants to ban assault weapons. I always new the msm was full of shit, but this is some serious endgame shit on their part.

  18. FishorMan Says:

The states are too broke to touch this (bad) option. Officers salary and especially their benefits are a huge hurdle to overcome. Besides they stick out like a sore thumb and it wouldn’t take but a week before every student in the school knew exactly who the armed officer was, even if he was plain-clothed. Then, when one of them snaps, he will just make sure to take that one out first.

Or maybe we could all get “lucky” and the Feds will take over the program. They can always print more money or get China to take on the debt so we can offer limited protection for our children. No thanks.

Why not get rid of these idiotic “Gun-Free Zones” and allow the law-abiding teachers, staff members, and janitors to show up to work tomorrow with their firearm of choice. It’s not like these “zones” were working out so well for us anyway. The ones waiting for the laws to change so they can go to work armed have already proven we have nothing to fear from them.

Why does Wayne offer us more statism? Does his wee little mind not form the simple connections? Teaching the children to rely on the state for “protection” isn’t a long term winning strategy for a group supposedly all about gun rights.

He had international press coverage to tell the entire world that schools in Utah have already solved this government created problem; they have armed teachers and staff who volunteered to carry concealed at work… and it’s been going on for years now. No, the NRA comes up another government program for the problem another government program created. Brilliant!!! Just brilliant.

  19. PawPaw Says:

The only way to stop an active shooter is to actively shoot him. Y’all chew on that for a while and tell me how best to do that.

I don’t know on Thursday, Dec 13th, what Dawn Hochsprung thought about the ideas of guns in schools, but I bet that on the morning of Dec 14th she wished that she had a shotgun in her office.

  20. Harold Says:

“Why does Wayne offer us more statism?”

Because he knows the Zeitgeist won’t support a NRA proposal to arm teachers and administrators … but he did carefully leave the door open to that, and also non-police armed guards.

  21. Chas Says:

“The only way to stop an active shooter is to actively shoot him.”

    That sounds good.
It seems that actively getting very upset with him was not effective.

  22. Chas Says:

Wayne called for “qualified armed security”. That does not automatically translate into statism. It could mean allowing staff to be armed, allowing carry on premises by parents, private security or police officers on premises, or government security officers on premises.
Wayne’s proposal is being implemented across the nation as we speak, undoubtedly in various different ways, mostly by lots of police officers on overtime, but I think that the days when kids are undefended are over.

The New York Daily News went berserk against Wayne on their front page, calling him a lunatic and railing against his ideas.
“CRAZIEST MAN ON EARTH: Just 90 MINUTES after moment of silence for Newtown victims, vile NRA nut blames everyone and everything EXCEPT the guns”

Geez, Wayne bit his tongue for a week, and they’re on about “Just 90 minutes . . .” Who are the real lunatics?

Children all across America are now protected with guns, as they were not before, but Wayne is “crazy” for advocating that? There’s no dealing with these people.

  23. MrSatyre Says:

Okay, Uncle, so let’s say you do have one person, your marshal, with a gun at a school. Shooter walks in, and, because someone has to be the first unlucky bastard to get shot, by chance the very first person he meets and takes by surprise and kills is the marshal. Now what?

  24. MrSatyre Says:

Sorry, I meant Kdawg, not you, Uncle.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
