Food Fight: Pedantic edition

One of the things that cracks me up in it’s sheer pointlessness is how devotees of certain food types get upset if someone else makes a similar dish and calls it the same thing. The classic is how chili doesn’t have beans in Texas but in 49 other states it does. So, those 49 states are clearly wrong. Or if you don’t boil it, it’s not a bagel! And here in the south, all soft drinks are cokes. Doesn’t matter if it’s a Coca Cola product or Pepsi. It’s still a coke.

Now, PawPaw is upset that I referred to some Cajun boiled peanuts. Having just got back from South Carolina, let me tell you Cajun boiled peanuts are everywhere. In this case, I don’t think Cajun refers to the group or ethnicity that came up with the food. But the style of spices that go in the pot. For instance, when I get in a Korean barbecue mode and, for an appetizer, toss some cucumbers on the grill before the meat, they’re not Korean barbecued cucumbers in that I think Koreans actually made them. But they are in the style I used to cook them.

But we can all agree this is not chili.

There was a place in Springfield, IL (I think) that served what they called ‘chili’. It was a pile of spicy meat in a pool of grease. Literally.

  2. Ancient Woodsman Says:

That…whatever it was…is “chili” in the same sense the “Manhattan style” is clam chowder.

    In other words, not.

  3. j t bolt Says:

No, Cincy is legit. And beans are legit as a topping.

  4. Gerry Says:

We put chili with beans on spagetti. We call it using up leftovers.

  5. Bryan S. Says:

Those of us that dont like beans appreciate chili without πŸ˜‰

  6. breda Says:

    It’s called “pop”

  7. Tim Covington Says:

If it has any chunks in it, besides meat, it is a spicy stew and not chili.

  8. Adam Lawson Says:

Ahem. Chili without beans is taco meat.

  9. TomcatTCH Says:

bean stew is chili? How odd.

  10. Gun Blog Black List Says:

I put chili on spaghetti or I put spaghetti on top of chili. Either way – I guess it depends on what order I dump the bad refrigerator leftovers into the garbage can.

  11. Rivrdog Says:

Brenda +1. It’s also called “soda”. Been all over this land over my 68 years, and while I’ve heard of Coke, Pepsi, RC and any other cola referred to as “coke”, I’ve never heard of any other flavor of fizzed water & sugar referred to as “soda”.

  12. Rivrdog Says:

    Make that last word “coke”.

  13. Jim Brack Says:

I’m in Georgia, and a Coke is a Coke. Pepsi is Pepsi. Any brand is called a soda. Just sayin…

  14. Lance R. Peak Says:

In South Texas, carbonated beverages of any flavour/type are referred to as “soda water”.

However being born in Florida and living most of my formative years in Tennessee (Oak Ridge), they’re all “Coke”.

The “What do you want to drink?” “A coke.” “What kind?” conversation isn’t just a comedy routine. Heck, our HS yearbook staff even had to change some photo captions because they capitalized “Coke” and were showing pics of Dr. Pepper or Pepsi.

Also, you are very right Unc, those other 49 states are wrong.

  15. ATLien Says:

Cincinnati should be placed under martial law til they give up that stupid “chili” BS.

  16. Bill Says:

If it ain’t got beans, it ain’t chili.

That stuff they call chili in parts of Texas is just taco or burrito filling without enough flour to make the tortillas!

  17. Beaumont Says:

Chocolate? WTF? That is definitely NOT chili.

I have to admit that I didn’t know bagels were boiled, but that’s OK — it just gives me another reason not to like them.

Q: What is a bagel? A: A doughnut made out of cement.

  18. davek Says:

Not only does chili not have beans, it doesn’t have tomato either.

You Philistines need to find other names for whatever the hell glop you eat.

  19. Grayson Says:

In Canada, chilli is considered to be proper only if it has venison, or elk or moose meat.
We just add beans in order to drive Texans freaking crazy. πŸ˜‰

  20. mariner Says:

    It’s called “pop” – Breda

Leave my Dad outta this! πŸ˜‰

  21. mostly cajun Says:

    +1 fot Davek!

If you want beans and tomatoes, you’re going for vegetable soup.

    MC

  22. Bill Says:

Sorry, but you Chili without beans guys have it all wrong!

Chili has beans, and if it has meat its called “chili con carne”.

  23. Justthisguy Says:

As a wise man once said, Cincinnatti “chili” isn’t chili, it’s bad spaghetti.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
