$190

That’s how much John Wayne paid for an AR-15 in the year of my birth. And his receipt is up for auction:

From Stuff

Clips were $10.

Unpossible! The People’s Republik Of Kalifornia NEVER allowed those Evil Black Guns into THEIR State!

  2. John Says:

Not a direct correlation but gas as 40 cents a gallon in 1971…

Magazines can still be found for $10 but they won’t be Colt manufacture.

  3. John Smith. Says:

OH GOD!! You used the C word….

  4. The Comedian Says:

The sales tax rate was on 5.5%.

Under the proposed rates, starting next month in Costa Mesa the sales tax rate will be 7.75%, a 55% increase in your lifetime.

But taxes are too low nowadays.

    /sarcasm

  5. The Comedian Says:

Ooops, it was 5%. Increase and proposed rates typed correctly.

  6. jon spencer Says:

That works out to about $1050 in todays money. According to a inflation calculator.

  7. Mike Says:

Well, $1050 is about the going rate today for a Colt 6920LE.

  8. John Smith. Says:

I bet John Wayne’s actual ar-15 would go for a mite higher than today’s retail cost…

    Clips

  10. John Says:

You can now buy 5.56 clips for about $0.03 each by the gross. Magazines however are considerably more expensive.

  11. Diomed Says:

So whatever happened to Colt AR-15 #16773?

  12. MAJ Mike Says:

    I paid $189.79 in 1978 for my Colt AR-15.

  13. jefferson101 Says:

Yeah, when you adjust for inflation, the price is not that much lower today.

The flip side of that would be that in 1971 I was making about $0.10/hr more than minimum wage, which was $1.65/hr.

Today, at close to a 15x multiple of that rate, I have the disposable income available to afford such expenses once in a while. When I was trying to live on $1.75/hr? Fat chance.

I’m just happy that I got to live through the Golden Age of milsurp firearms while I did have some disposable income.

That’s right down the street from my house! I’ve been there.

  15. The Freeholder Says:

I was going to bid on it, but I can’t find the blinking auction. grumble, grumble

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
