   Hey, I may be way off on this, but I’m getting a little tired of these “soft” death threats being taken so seriously. “I wish someone would shoot you” or “I hope someone shoots you” aren’t, in my opinion, really valid death threats. The person isn’t saying “I’m going to shoot you”, they are saying something akin to “I hope a piano falls on your head”. Whould you take a “I hope a piano falls on your head” as a death threat?

   “I hope someone shoots you” is indeed different than stating that “I am going to shoot you” or “I want to shoot you.” The former statement indicates the impotent rage of a powerless, self-proclaimed victim, who is simply stating his or her feelings of victimization at the hands of forces too powerful to overcome or even to fight themselves. It is also oddly non-judgemental, another liberal hot button, in that the person making the statement is not making any decision about whether you should be shot or not – he isjust hoping it happens.

   So in the indirect soft death threat one sees an epiphany of liberal progressive mindset – self-admittedly too weak to do anything for or by themselves, unable to decide if something is right or wrong, just wanting someone else to take care of it for them.

   The difference to me is that the individual didn’t make his wish known via a blog, call in radio show, ir in a counter letter to the editor. He took the time and effort to look this guy up and call him at home. That classifies as a threat to me.
