Gun sales up, crime drops

According to the FBI report:

According to the figures released today by the FBI, the estimated number of violent crimes in the nation declined in 2009 for the third consecutive year. Property crimes also declined in 2009, marking the seventh straight year that the collective estimates for these offenses dropped below the previous years total.

The 2009 statistics show that the estimated volumes of violent and property crimes declined 5.3 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively, when compared with the 2008 estimates. The violent crime rate for the year was 429.4 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants (a 6.1 percent decrease from the 2008 rate), and the property crime rate was 3,036.1 per 100,000 persons (a 5.5 percent decrease from the 2008 figure).

So explain this: Police budgets have been shrinking. Not only that, typically crime rates head up when the economy heads down.

There are no neat answers. Among the theories: As overall economic activity slows, more people who otherwise would be at work are unemployed and at home, and when they do travel they are not as likely to carry items of value, so burglaries and street robberies decline.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said that smarter policing practices and investments in law enforcement play a significant role in reducing violent and property crime. He said the Obama administration has provided an additional $519 million in Byrne Justice Assistance Grants to support state and local criminal justice partners.

Yep, Obama is to blame… but not for the reasons that the left were hoping for!

Beg to differ; he’s going to take credit for all three years of the decrease, because he’s Just That Aw-Sum!”

    @ Shootin’ Buddy–
Anything that makes Sarah B worry makes me smile.

I think you could easily make the case that Barack ‘Gun salesman of the year’ Obama is directly responsible for the decrease in violent crime as of late.
