Quote of the Day

John Oliver:

There is a difference between what you can do and what you should do. For instance, you can build a Catholic church next to a playground. Should you?

Beside a playground is ok as vermin tend not to do things in broad daylight where parents with weapons nearby may be. However as a daycare that is just begging for trouble.

  2. Ellen Says:

Quite aside from that — think of the stained glass windows! Playgrounds have quite a few flying objects.

  3. Wolfwood Says:

First off, Oliver is a jackwagon.

Second, you can send your kids to the government-run public schools, but should you? Even under Oliver’s deranged view of the Church, your kids would be safer with the priests than the teachers.

  4. Matt Groom Says:

The one I keep using is “You can build a BBQ Pork stand next to a Synagogue or Mosque, but should you?”

  5. Rustmiester Says:

Oh, that’s right – all Catholic priests are homosexual pedophiles. Took me a second to understand the analogy. It’s OK to use prejudicial stereotypes now? Sweet!

  6. nk Says:

    What Wolfwood said.

Name me another non-governmental institution in America that has built more hospitals and schools than the Catholic Church.

Were they too forgiving to a handful of perverts? Yes. But as the joke goes, “The Church these days may have eased off on sinning but it’s still going strong on forgiving”.

Equating radical Islam with Catholicism is like equating Hitler with Ghandi.

  7. Stormy Dragon Says:

I think a lot of commenters on this blog need to adjust their sarcasm detectors. Of course they view expressed was ridiculous. The ridiculousness of the argument was the entire point.

“Equating radical Islam with Catholicism is like equating Hitler with Ghandi.”

Nowadays yes, but during the middle ages the Catholic church was every bit as radical as the muzzies and very similar in their outlook to non-Catholics.

  10. Wolfwood Says:

Except that Oliver wasn’t being absurdist, at least without a sharp poke at the eye of an unrelated third party. Matt Groom’s analogy is far more apt, perhaps even more so because Jews and Muslims aren’t (theoretically) offended by other people eating pork.

  11. Otter Says:

As part of the gun community, I find it amazing that someone here could make the logical leap that “A did X, A is part of community Y, all Ys do X”. Nice.

Yes the Catholic Church has had priests that are pieces of trash child abusers.

However, I am SICK of this crap where all priests are singled out as homosexual child rapists. By doing a little research and looking at the numbers Catholic Priests commit these crimes at a significantly smaller portion of the general population and SMALLER than other religious organizations.

Every time a priest does something to a child, I want only the harshest penalty applied to them. However, you can’t lump them all together.

Well, i think that was Oliver’s point, using another example.

  13. divemedic Says:

Exactly. How can the gun community stand there and say it is wrong to punish all gun owners when a deranged nutjob guns down a school, and then turn around and blame all Muslims when a deranged nutjob hijacks and flies a plane into a building?

How can people attack the Muslims because of the actions of a few nutcases, and then defend the Catholic church when their nutcases molest children?

The hypocrisy of such a viewpoint stuns me.

  14. nk Says:

My sister in law is a Muslim, of Albanian descent, from Montenegro. Complete different from the Saudi camel molesters. If bin Laden ever tried to put her into a burkha, he would be singing soprano forever after.

  15. Bubblehead Les Says:

But the Real Question that should’ve been asked was “You could build a Gun Range in Chicago, but Should you?” HELL YES!

  16. Veeshir Says:

Yeah, because those priests molested kids because their religion told them to and because they thought their god was going to reward them in Heaven for doing it.

  17. NJT Says:

I was a daily reader of this blog.

Due to this post, I’m removing it from my list of daily reads.

  18. nk Says:

Your business, NJT, but there’s nothing to indicate that Uncle agrees with Mr. Oliver. The message and the messenger are two different things.

As you saw from other comments, Mr. Oliver is being given short shrift here, and it would not have happened had Uncle not posted that quote.

  19. Guav Says:

    Rustmiester & Otter:

No, of course not all Catholic priests are homosexual pedophiles—some of them are heterosexual pedophiles.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
