Careful out there

In PA, looks like someone shot someone at the firing range and stole their guns. More here.

    There be monsters out there.

Unfortunately, they look like regular people, usually.

This happens over and over and yet we will have numbnuts telling us that “no one needs to carry a pistol at a shooting range.”

There’s a range around here that I call “the wild west range.” It’s in the middle of nowhere and there are no RSOs, basically it’s a field with three berms and a concrete pad.

Usually I go with several other people because I realized just how easy it would be to be victimized there. I mean really, who’s going to make a “shots fired” call if they are within earshot of a firing range? If I do go by myself, I wear a concealable kevlar vest I bought years ago after a spate fatal of robberies in my industry.

I have left several public outdoor ranges when I wasn’t satisfied with other shooters’ gun safety or when someone looked like he was on parole or work-release.

At the puclic range about 100 from my home you occasionally get a high yahoo factor (you know, “heh, watch this, Joe”).

I just pack things in and leave.

Also more scary is we can talk tough, and even I always have a loaded gun on me at the range (and its a private range with closed circuit cameras…a cop tried to snatch a gun he liked and was caught and fired inside of a week)

What are you going to do if somebody comes towards you with a gun at low ready. Go all tactical ninja….or say “Hey What’s up?”

People at gun ranges from my observations are MUCH friendlier than the average joe on the street…this predator is taking advantage of that.

That’s because a lot of people in the gun culture believe their own bullshit about criminals not practicing with firearms or that only good guys like guns and do not believe that the criminal class is there too.

Sebastian’s linked post says he was “killed from a distance”. Depending on what that distance is, having a sidearm may have no effect beyond giving your murderer another gun.

Not advocating for carry-free ranges; but a carry gun is not a magic talisman or a panacea (how many times have you heard that?).

    Just throwing that out there.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
