Today’s needlessly complicated firearms question

From Subguns, the legalities of a patch catcher. Made to allow easy clean up of patches and solvents. But can attach a bottle to a gun barrel.

BTW, is it just me or is there no way on the Subguns.com forum to, you know, read the whole thread without clicking on each individual message?

That’s like the very worst parts of a web-forum and an email list, together at last!

    old forum. never changed.

You can ask Tom why the forum wasn’t upgraded, he’s happy to explain it.

As for the collector, non-issue without some intent.

I have read multiple times that mere possession of NFA items counts as criminal, even if the parts are not assembled, the parts are on different, individually legal, firearms, or the parts are “intended” for assembly of individually legal firearms. Which is it – intent or possession – that makes it illegal?

Since such a “patch catcher” could be made to work without threading the end of the barrel, but with padded clamps instead, it seems that wanting to be able to mount such a device, and having to thread the barrel for it is nothing but a thinly-disguised ruse to wanting a threaded barrel for other purposes.

I could just as well thread my barrel for a “banana opener” device to start a perfect quad cut in the end of said fruit…….

A very good question. The answer is both. It depends a lot on circumstance. If you intend for it to be a silencer, but it wasn’t designed as one, then it’s a silencer, even if it doesn’t work. If you don’t intend for it to be a silencer, then unless it was designed/redesigned as one, it isn’t. The definition is at 27 CFR §479.11, under “Muffler or silencer”.

That’s different from something like a machinegun conversion device, since that definition is a bit broader (“any combination of parts”).

Rivrdog: The barrel isnt threaded. Go have a looksey.

it;s a device that clamps to the barrel, but accepts standard soda bottles. Looking at it, I doubt it would do much better than duct-taping a coke bottle to the end of the barrel if one were trying to suppress a rifle.

it doesn’t work all that well, btw.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
