Bad ammo, reloads or other

Police officer’s Glock 21 exploded. Cause looks to be bad ammo. First time it was shot, apparently, which rules out using non-jacketed ammo in a Glock, which can be bad.

First time ever used? Want to bet there was a barrel obstruction?

  2. Gunner M. Says:

just great. I’m looking at buying a glock 21 or a glock 21c so this makes me feel real good.

  3. SayUncle Says:

Why? Clearly an ammo issue. I’d still get one.

  4. Jailer Says:

Flighterdoc, first thing that came to my mind too.

  5. Flighterdoc Says:

My G21 worked first time (and every time since then)….more than 5,000 times, in fact.

Of course, before the first shot I field stripped it and ran a patch through the barrel. But I’m not one of those ‘professionals’.

I always wear a glove when I fire handguns. Keeps the sweat from getting into the gun and provides protection in case of a kaboom. I use a thin leather, mesh back, batting glove with the thumb, trigger and middle fingers cut back.

I have never owned a full size automatic and after long thought have decided on a glock in 45acp. I was down to either a model 30 or a 21 and figured the 21 was best. I’m still dithering on the “c” part, but that might end up depending on the money in hand on the day of purchase.

  8. Homer Says:

New gun, so maybe it was tight and fired slightly out of battery, leaving more of the case than usual unsupported?

  9. Weer'd Beard Says:

Barrel obstruction might be valid. Could also be a defect in the chamber that happened to snuck past QC.

I mean there’s a reason why most companies ship their guns with a fired case.

  10. Tomcatshanger Says:

Glock does ship their gun with a fire case, 2 in every new Glock I’ve ever seen.

  11. Weer'd Beard Says:

If Tom’s right and every glock that comes off the line gets two pills run down the bore before it leaves the factory, it must have been gun damaged by the user (see obstructed bore) or bad ammo.

  12. straightarrow Says:

to be snide, it appears that while the officer’s hand was uglied up considerably, the mishap could only have improved the looks of the gun.

  13. Jailer Says:

I’m betting squib round from bad ammo that the shooter didn’t catch. Our department has had 2 Glock 22’s with the same failure since we adopted Glocks and both were from squib rounds that the shooter failed to recognize.

  14. straightarrow Says:

I was thinking the same thing Jailer. My brother who is a LEO had a squib at the range, but he caught it before he tried his next round.

Gunner C, i wouuld skip the C model unless this is not going to be a carry gun. I have a 21C & a springfield V10 & both are safe queens. Did a couple of night time shoots with both & you completely degrade your night vision after the first shot. Great guns for day-time, at night, not so much.

having seen 5 kboomed glocks (2 right next to me)and still having pieces of one of them in my leg , i am at best adverse to even being on the same range as one…
having said that i will admit to having shot maybe 5k rounds of lead reload 10mm thru my 1st gen 20 with no problems…
the 21 i handled after it kboom’d was in 5 pieces , none of them attached to the others…
i’ll just stick with my H&K and be happy to have all my fingers…

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
