Things I’ve learned on facebook

I’ve been on facebook for a week. Here’s what I have learned:

Everyone is having a bad day.

People hate Mondays.

But they like cats. Facebook is like a Garfield comic. No word on lasagna yet.

The sports franchise from your particular geographic region is superior to the sports franchise from my particular geographic region.

I am the only person on Earth who doesn’t play Mafia Wars.

Make that two of us on the Mafia Wars things.

But I deeply distrust programs that use your FaceBook account, and have the ability to rifle through it for information.

(I don’t know whether most users notice, but a lot of games/quizzes are outside programs using FB’s toolkit, and they need access to your personal information to run properly…It’s one thing to ask whether you can trust FB not to misuse your personal information. It’s another thing to trust 100 different third-party programs not to misuse FB’s collection of personal information.)

  2. John Says:

    +1 on the Mafia Wars

  3. Jay G. Says:

+1 on the mafia wars. And, as you know my last name from FaceBook, I happen to be of the Eye-talian persuasion.

I wonder if I could make a humongous pain in the ass out of myself and lobby FB to drop MW on the basis that it’s offensive to Italian Americans and perpetuates the stereotype of all Italians as mobsters?

Nah. I’ll just arrange to have their kneecaps broken by Gino Three Fingers…

  4. Bitter Says:

    Another on the Mafia Wars.

  5. RW Says:

    +1 more on MW.

Also, I swear I must hit the “ignore” or “hide” buttons more than any person on the planet, because I do several times each instance I log in, which is about 3 times per week, or every eleven-thousandth irrelevant entry by the random too-much-time-on-their-hands housewife/mom. Yeah, i typed that; you gals need to get lives.

  6. Molon Labe Says:

I considered signing up for Facebook after my wife got an account. I quickly passed on the notion after realizing that the only people who post on there are teachers with nothing to do during the summer except tell everyone that they are going to soccer games, or jilted ex-high school classmates who want to see if their nemesis ever got the karma they deserved.

However, when my wife is on, i can’t help but to use her account to play that “Bejewled” game. Freakin’ addicting.

  7. Alchemyst Says:

Most of us have an idea of when the U.S. started it’s downward spiral into the morass we’re in today. I however, happen to know the true skinny. It was when, a few years back the number of cats overtook the number of dogs as pets. Just remember folks if you like cats then you’re part of the problem.

  8. Rustmeister Says:

No problem, Unc. I’ll send you an invite. =P

  9. Xspectre8 Says:

When I was initiated to FB leaning to block “Mafia Wars” app was almost instantaneous. That sort of flies in the face of the gunnie + violent game stereotype, eh?

  10. Mikee Says:

I am old enough to realize that if I wait long enough, my suits and ties will be in style again, and the most popular fad will be history.

    Two words: Pet rocks.

  11. Chad Says:

Once I learned the “Block this application” command, Facebook became tolerable.

  12. Madrocketscientist Says:

+1 of Mafia Wars, very annoying game

  13. ATLien Says:

Mikee, FB’s been around longer than you realize. It didn’t get popular til MySpace turned into a digital ghetto of people’s moms.

  14. TexasFred Says:

I am the only person on Earth who doesn’t play Mafia Wars.

No, you’re not… And that goofy-assed Farm Town thing?? My God, how can so-called adults be so mindless??

  15. Tom Says:

I’d rather have a couple extra pussies sitting around then a few extra bitches Alchemyst.

Mafia wars…as if watching them in action every day in DC weren’t time consuming enough.

  16. Jim W Says:

Block All Invites From This Application is your friend.

99 percent of these apps are just email harvesters.

  17. D.W. Drang Says:

I am the only person on Earth who doesn’t play Mafia Wars.
Patently, untrue, since I never heard of the thing.

Then again, I think Mrs. Drang and I are the only people on earth who don’t use Spacebook or MyFace. And, for all I know, Mrs. Drang does so secretly. We were at her family reunion earlier this month, and I suggested that the clan should start a blog to keep track of who’s doing what, when and where events are, etc., thinking Blogger lets you have a private blog with up to 100 users…
Her cousins started exchanging SpaceFace pages…

  18. Larry Correia Says:

Personally I like it. I’m coming at it from a little different angle though. As a novelist it gives me a good way to keep up with fans, which helps me sell books, which makes it so that I can purchase the important things, like ammunition or bacon.

I don’t play any of the games. I don’t have time.

  19. Mjolnir Says:

Yeah, ditto on the Mafia wars thing.

  20. Nylarthotep Says:

I’m guessing mafia wars is a game, but I’ve never heard of it. I guess I’m not missing much.

I am doing my best to be as anti-technology as possible. I’d not carry a cell phone if my work didn’t require me to carry one. (But it doesn’t work all the time. For some reason the radio keeps shutting off.)

I’m avoiding Face book like the plague. I made the mistake of joining LinkedIn and found that is a pain in the ass as well.

  21. mike hollihan Says:

I don’t play MW either, nor Farmville. Like some of the others, I don’t trust any of the apps on FB. At all.

  22. Borepatch Says:

    Borepatch likes this.

    😉

  23. Breda Says:

hmm…someone must have talked you into it.

    *blinks innocently*

  24. Tom Says:

if ya wanna be REALLY paranoid clingers just think how easy it makes .gov data mining.

Gee, who did this wacky guy hang with? Lets go keep an eye on them too.

  25. Mopar Says:

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
