I want to be a beekeeper. I want to keep bees.

Seriously, the state regulates bees? Does that happen enough to warrant that?

I’m going to go out on a limb and say there’s probably a good reason for this. Think of Africanized bees and the problems they create.

Florida, IIRC, pays people to keep bees since a bigger population of natives will fight off invaders. We’ve got some fellows down the road who have many hives all over. Their honey sucks, though…

  2. Nick Says:

There is a reason. Bees carry parasites. Has little to nothing to do with invasive bees, but more with parasites wiping out other bee populations.

But it is much funnier to think of it in the context of the children’s song and the inability of a child to “bring home a baby bumblebee.”

It is really just a note that literally if there is something for government to regulate, it will be regulated. Bees! Of all things…bees.

  3. Kristopher Says:

Nick: the problem is that the biggest beehive disease and parasite vector is … the inspection tools that state inspectors use to check for parasites and fungal infections.

Getting the government OUT of this would solve most of the problem that the government claims they are preventing.

Hmmm, I am pretty sure that sentence should be the summation of any discussion about virtually every problem in society.

  5. Kristopher Says:

Well … oyu wouldn’t want to have unregulated bees … someone might get stung.

  6. Wolfwood Says:

You don’t want them to get away? Have you considered putting them on elastic so that when they go get pollen they COME RIGHT BACK HERE?

How about litte teeny tiny locator anklets?

Actually, it is a good solid rule. Bee infection can wipe out a state’s agriculture. You aren’t going to ensure that your bees stay on your property; you can’t afford to pay for the damages you might cause.

Equipment that has sat around is the most likely to have become infected, just as a function of time; it is also the most likely to be resold.

“Getting the government OUT of this would solve most of the problem that the government claims they are preventing.” This is silly and childish. Russia got government out of everything and surprise – communism was remarkably unpleasant for the vast majority of people. Try to do away with government, and you’ll still have the reality of the more powerful forcing their will upon the less powerful, as systematically as they can figure. Instead of the limited inperfect protections laws and government give, you’d be naked before their power. Instead of being mostly a slave, you’d be completely a slave.

I agree with the posters above. This one actually makes sense.

Worldwide, Honey Bee populations have fallen dramatically in the last 6-10 years. Nobody knows why for certain, but the most legitimate theory is something called Colony Collapse Disorder in which the Bees leave the hive one day and die out in the field for reasons unknown. This is significant because Bees pollinate something like 1/3 of the world’s agricultural output. All of these crops will die without Bees.

Theories run the gamut from unlikely things like cell phone radiation, to science fiction like global warming, to more reasonable explanations like mites, microbes, or viruses which are spread within colonies by infected bees, causing them all to get sick and die. Since they don’t die in the hive, it’s hard to pinpoint.

    What doesn’t gummint regulate?

  11. Kristopher Says:

Dusty: Your opinion is full o’ crap, in my opinion.

Governments have done more killing and enslaving than any other organizations ever.

    Look up “Democide” some time.

As for your no government = communism notion … pure idiocy. How do you force redistribution without creating a defacto government org?

Government is only really useful for Defense, Justice, infractructure ( roads and bridges, etc. ), and … maybe … emergency services.

And before you comment about beekeeping, I would suggest you learn something about the subject before trying comment on it. bees don’t spread these diseases, they are spread by hive parasite organisms and predators. My relatives keep bees. They have only lost hives to infections after some shithead from the state government poked one of their hives with his tools.

Kris, governments and guns don’t kill people. People kill people.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
