Unclear on the concept

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership refers to a man charged in a double homicide as a Law-Abiding Gun Owner

Cmon dude. You have to know that if this guy didn’t have a carry permit, he couldn’t possibly have committed murder. Look at New Jersey. Oh wait.

    Never mind.

  2. wizardpc Says:

Hey, um, unc. we have a problem. That article is the #1 google result for “Carry Permit Holders” Can we fix that?
On to the rest of my post:

Wow. 3 permit holders in the ENTIRE COUNTRY have committed crimes since July 5th?

out of how many millions? What’s the ratio in the general population?

  3. RAH Says:

He was law abiding until he killed 2 people. Not knowing the details and he has not been convicted. the person is still not a criminal.

Maybe his friend were robbing him. Maybe it was jealous rage. I do not know. Just that he had CCW and shot 2 people.

Not a good example to declare we are so decent and such.

You know its rare if they make this big of a deal out of one incident.

“has three handgun permits, all obtained since 2005. He also has a concealed-handgun permit”

interesting… NC has pistol purchase permits… and they have CHL… they do not have handgun permits… getting a pistol purchase permit costs $5 and depending on the county, can be had in minutes… they are good for 3 years, so the one in 2005 might be expired…

but since you need that permit for any hand gun acquisition, as well as the acquiring of crossbows, they are really easy to get… as for the CHL, if someone can get a permit, and they satisfy the sheriff, they get one…

but i suppose that informed articles wouldnt let their story have the same weight

It looks like you beat me to the thought…but I posted a probably horribly inaccurate…but good enough to illustrate the point…analysis of that very thought here

  7. Yu-Ain Gonnano Says:

Is there any way to find out how many total murders were committed in that same time period?

  8. Yu-Ain Gonnano Says:

OK, according to wikipedia the murder rate in the U.S. was 5.5 per 100,000 per year in 2004.

In a population of 300 million that equates to 16,500 murders per year or a little over 45 per day.

For the 12 day period between July 5 and July 17 that would work out to about 542 murders.

3 of which are CCW permits holders. Yep, that scares the bejeezus out of me.

So a whopping 0.55% of murders are committed by permit holders despite being quite a bit more than 0.55% of the population. Anyone got the approximate number of permit holders?

  9. Linoge Says:

Well, that they are trying to paint “law-abiding gun owners” with a bloody brush goes without saying.

But something tells me they may be getting a little more clear on the whole Google concept…

  10. AntiCitizenOne Says:

File this one under “How not to win…”

  11. Nylarthotep Says:

They really miss the concept that just because you qualify for a gun permit or a CCW doesn’t mean that you will use it responsibly. The fact that the majority of CCW permit holders are more law abiding is what matters, not the fact that some go off the reservation, or were never on it in the first place.

I wonder how the Brady’s analysis would go if they carried it to LEOs.

  12. DJK Says:

    Chris…

“if someone can get a permit, and they satisfy the sheriff, they get one…”

How, exactly, just they satisfy the sheriff? I’m not sure I’d want a CHL there.

  13. Larry Says:

And if you have a CHL in NC, you don’t have to get a pistol purchase permit if you want to buy a new gun. So, either the purchase permits were obtained prior to the CHL, or the Brady folks are clueless (likely), or (more likely) they are spicing the story up for effect.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
