Speaking of loopholes

This weekend I used the gun show loophole to buy a weapon. As is always the case, this purchase did not involve a loophole because there isn’t one. But this case was different in that it also did not involve a gun show. See, I bought a Lee Enfield rifle from Les Jones. You see, when one private party lawfully sells a firearm to another private party (as happened here), that is the supposed loophole they are referring to.

In other news, 303 British is spendy. I happened to stop at Dick’s Sporting Goods for something and decided I’d check to see if they had any. They did. Remington brand 303 British was 22.69 for 20 (about $1.13/round).

I’d post pics but Les already has.

S&B makes quite decent .303 for less, if you can find it.

Apparently the prvi partisan produced stuff (aka Wolf Gold) is good as well.

Did either private party rent retail sales space at an advertised event to enable the sale prior to the transaction? I understand that this detail is wholly and completely insignificant, but just asking.

  3. SayUncle Says:

he let me know via his webpage that it was for sale.

My promises notwithstanding, I suspect you will post a review of your latest Evil Gun Show Loophole Assault Weapon Purchase (even though it wasn’t and isn’t) prior to my review of my last Evil Gun Show Loophole Assault Weapon Purchase (even though it wasn’t and isn’t).

Do you reload? I have some .303 Brit brass that I could very easily be persuaded to part with 😉

  6. SayUncle Says:

I do not reload but if ammo keeps rising, I may start.

Hey! I’ve got one of those, too! (Actually, I have two, but one is unsafe to fire.) I second the S&B stuff – it’s not bad and it is much less expensive than Remington, but reloading is the way to go with the .303. That rifle is a lot of fun to shoot with the 123 grain bullets designed for the 7.62×39 round. (It’s less pleasant with the 172gr loads.)

If you do reload .303, I strongly recommend neck-sizing only. The Enfield action has rear, not front, locking lugs, and it’s pretty springy. Case life is short, and full-length resizing makes it even shorter.

What is the number on the bolt head? It should be 0, 1, or 2. If it’s 2 that means the headspace is nearing maximum, and most every Enfield I’ve seen has either a 1 or 2 bolt head. I’ve only seen one zero.

Congratulations on the purchase! Bring it to GBRIII, and I’ll bring mine.

I’m hoping, once my Steyr gets here, I can post about it coming to me through the mail in such a way as to make Paul Helmke cry.

  9. Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Says:

    Convert it to .45-70.

  10. nk Says:

How much was the rifle? I got a little disposable income (so disposable that I have not even deposited the check for a couple of months) and I was musing about a Winchester 94 in .30-30. But maybe I could get both.

  11. SayUncle Says:

    $150.

My friend bought a handgun at the gun show in the DPRK this weekend. When the guy said, “OK, you can pick it up in 10 days at the…” I said, “Wait just a minute! Isn’t there an Evil Gun Show Loophole so he can have it right now?” the vendor totally got it! I didn’t think he’d ever stop laughing.

  13. guy Says:

$0.45 a round before shipping, but even overnighted it shouldn’t be over $1 a round.

  14. guy Says:

    Ooops…

Here’s the actual link to the cheap 303 ammo

tgirsh (I’d say Tom but no one but you would know who I was talking to) I pay for my Web hosting. So what? If I paid for an ad in the local Thrifty Nickel it wouldn’t be any different.

I’m selling from my personal collection to Uncle’s personal collection after holding the gun for several years. Private party to private party. Why should the state be involved?

I’m legally eligible to buy guns, as evidenced by a number of recent purchases from gun dealers that involved background checks and also my TN handgun carry permit. Uncle, likewise. Why shouldn’t we be able to transfer a 50+ year old gun between ourselves without state intervention?

  16. Jon C. Says:

Hey- Sportsman’s guide has some Pakistani surplus .303

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
