More Dems and guns

Update: looks like Claire McCaskill isn’t that pro-gun.

Breaking the mold:

She’s pro-gun rights, pro-death penalty and wary of big government waste.

Meet Claire McCaskill, the senator-elect from the generally conservative state of Missouri. She’s a Democrat.

Like many of her freshman Democratic colleagues in the Senate and the House of Representatives, McCaskill defies the long-standing stereotype of Democrats as the party of San Francisco liberals. Consider:

• Sen.-elect Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, calmly and resolutely against abortion rights.

• Sen.-elect Jon Tester of Montana, a flat-topped farmer and butcher who loves his guns.

• Sen.-elect Jim Webb of Virginia, a virtual compendium of alpha-male machismo who wore combat boots on the campaign trail and served as President Reagan’s secretary of the Navy.

• In the House, freshman Democrats include Heath Shuler of North Carolina, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

• All three new Democrats from Indiana oppose abortion.

Each of them is pro-gun too.

I assume they’re all also opposed to open borders and amnesty, so they can help us tand against Bush, his new luncheon buddies and allies, Pelosi, Reid and the other Democratic “leadership”.

  2. straightarrow Says:

I posted this on another site about this same issue. I addressed only the House, but I suspect the same dynamic to apply to the new Senators, as well.

“Pelosi has the power to effectively ineffectuate the new members if they do not toe the party line. It remains to be seen if “careerism” tempers their principles or if they will stand fast.

I bet on Pelosi snapping them into line. I hate it, but I think that is what will happen. Remember, they can always exclude themselves from the more onerous laws with which they burden us.”

  3. SayUncle Says:

And if she does, it’s two years and out.

  4. KCSteve Says:

    Claire’s pro-gun all right.

Just as long as the only guns are in the hands of troops she controls!

  5. Billll Says:

The nutroots never complain about stands like this, because they _know_ they’re lying.
See also taqia: Muslim doctrine that permits lying if it furthers the cause.

  6. Mel Says:

Claire lost in rural Missouri, winning only because of strong majorities in the St Louis and Kansas City areas.

  7. Captain Holly Says:

To Media types, McCaskill is “pro-gun” only because she doesn’t call for immediate confiscation of all guns in private hands.

The Media seem to believe that a “moderate” stance is one where gun owners are compensated for their guns after the government siezes them.

An “anti-gun” person to the Media would be someone who believes in confiscating all guns and then imprisoning all gun owners.

  8. Ron W Says:

    Captain Holly,

You’re right. The “Media type” politicians are those who SAY they only want “sensible gun control”; something that facilitates the incrementalism toward their ultimate goal, described thusly:

“A system of licensing and registration, is the perfect device to deny gun ownership to the bourgeoisie.” –Vladamir Ilyich Lenin, First Communist Dictator of Russia

“We can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles” — President Bill Clinton In Discussion With National Service Volunteers, New Brunswick, New Jersey, March 1, 1993

Update: looks like Claire McCaskill isn’t that pro-gun.

There’s an understatment if I’ve ever heard one. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger “isn’t that pro-gun,” but he still managed to eke out a C+ from the same NRA that gave McCaskill an F.

  10. rightwingprof Says:

The three Blue Dog Dems who ran in Indiana all ran on solid pro-gun platform. One is not a freshman, but was my Rep in the 90s. He refused to back Clinton’s gun control agenda in spite of all the arm twisting, and paid for it. He was graded down by the NRA and GOA for supporting McCain-Feingold.

So one of the three is tested. The other two … well, if they support gun control, I guarantee you they won’t get re-elected. Not in Indiana.

  11. Ron W Says:

Support of the RKBA is one of the basic things that distinguishes whether polticians are patriots or tyrants–whether Democrat, Republican or Independent:

“It was a basic principle of a tyrant to unarm his people of weapons, money,
and all means whereby they resist his power.”
    Sir Walter Raleigh (1554 – 1618)

“Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of
    their arms.”–Aristotle

“The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered,
as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong
moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will
generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to
resist and triumph over them…. .One of the ordinary modes by which tyrants accomplish their purpose without resistance, is by the disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms.” –Joseph Story, U.S. Supreme Court
