Cheney’s mishap

The big news in gun blogging land is that Cheney shot someone while hunting. As a gun blogger, I guess I’m obligated to mention it. So, there it is. I really don’t have much to say about it but lots of others do:

Xrlq says: Jim and Sarah Brady have pretty well thrown away any pretense of (1) not wanting to ban hunting or (2) being Republicans. The story of Cheney’s hunting accident had barely broke when both of them implied Dick Cheney was a would-be murderer.

The other Xrlq says: Another “friend” of gun rights makes a fool of himself (and by extension, all of us) by forgetting the rules of safe gun handling.

Aunt B. says: Gun nuts, what’s the proper etiquette in a situation like this? Does the guy who got shot now get a free shot at the vice president?

The Comedian: Hunting with Vice President Cheney — still safer then riding with Senator Kennedy. Ouch. He also has some Cheney Hunting Buddy shirts.

t3rrbile says: you have to know what is behind what you are shooting at.

JR says: Who hasn’t been peppered by birdshot on a bird hunting trip? Nobody? Me neither. That’s kind of what I thought first but I’ve never known of anyone being peppered going to the hospital.

Cowboy Blob says: Vice President Cheney was hunting with an itty-bitty girly man 28 gauge. That may have saved this dude’s life.

Xavier says: Rule #4.

You don’t hunt with high-powered attorneys, I take it.

Cheney’s gonna wind up wishing he’d given the guy the other barrel before all’s said and done.

I heard somewhere the guy came up on Cheney without announcing himself.

If the old guy had a heart-attack, the Dem’s would be dancing in the street, no?

On the “non-conspiracy” angle, if they had wanted to keep it quiet, I’m sure the guy would have died of a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound. How many Clinton people did that?
Come to think of it, how many people went hunting with Clinton?

    heh

This just gives me added incentive to watch The Daily Show tonight.

Cheney wasn’t HUNTING, he was just killing things.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that 500 farm-raised pheasants were released yesterday morning at the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township for the benefit of Cheney’s 10-person hunting party. The group killed at least 417 of the birds, illustrating the unsporting nature of canned hunts. The party also shot an unknown number of captive mallards in the afternoon.

That’s just sort of pathetic. But I think it may say alot about him.

  5. Heartless Libertarian Says:

Not really him, but I think it says a lot about what happens when people with lots of money and not a lot of time want to go hunting.

I don’t see Cheney (or any VP, for that matter) having bunches of free time to spend sitting in a duck blind or on a deer stand.

And I also heard that the shootee left the group and failed to announce himself, per protocol designed to avoid just this kind of incident, when he came back.

Have to agree with HL. Bird hunting has some very specific rules. If you don’t discuss them at the start of the hunt then you made a mistake. Never, ever, walk back onto the line unannounced. You leave your spot and the shooters to the sides of you get to take your zone. If you walk back in, they don’t know you’ve walked into the zone.

Bird hunting is hard enough, and Cheney wasn’t fully outside of blame, but the vast majority of statements I’ve read on the subject really show how few people have any clue about bird hunting.

Oh, and Pheasant hunting as described by Guav is a very common “sport” in England. Canned hunts aren’t exactly sporting, but they are legal and fairly common. Don’t like it? Call your representatives. Then go home and have your chicken or steak dinner.

I was an avid dove hunter as a kid and have eaten a few pellets myself. That shit stings. I don’t like the current “Ahhh, see that’s what’s wrong with guns” line some dumbasses are pulling. My dad taught me (correctly I think) that is invariably the shooter’s fault as the shooter’s responsibility is anything is downrange, but always, always hedge your bet and announce yourself when coming back onto the line. Cheney has probably been peppered himself. Shooting a fellow hunter accidentally is the least of his sins, IMHO.

Went to the Cafe Press website (went through “Cheney Hunting Buddy” t-shirt, then went looking for bumper stickers) to pick up a few “I’d Rather Hunt With Dick Cheney Than Drive With Ted Kennedy”, when I found that they have more anti-Cheney/anti-Bush material than anything “pro” either Cheney or Bush. Anyone know anything about the Cafe Press?

  10. SayUncle Says:

Olde, anyone can create a shirt at cafepress.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
