Note to Texans

Particularly to Texas bartenders. When you ask me what I want to drink and I respond with Bourbon, do not look at me and say What would you like? We have Jack Daniels and Crown Royal. Those are not Bourbons.

I swear, two different Texas bartenders did that.

  1. Thibodeaux Says:

Ever see The Alamo (the John Wayne version)?

Tennesseean: “What do you Texicans use for drinking whiskey?”

    Texican: “Drinking whiskey!”

  2. Dennis Says:

I thought I was the only one who made the distinction. Having spent a number of years in Kentucky, I know and appreciate the difference

  3. Ravenwood Says:

As a member of the Wild Turkey Rare Breed Society since it’s infancy, I make the distinction all the time.

  4. Ravenwood Says:

And since Crown Royal isn’t even made in the States, there is no way it could be bourbon.

  5. Blounttruth Says:

EGODS, I agree with Ravenwood. Give me Turkey or nothing at all, but Crown offered from a bartender as a bourbon? Better get home quick Uncle….

  6. triticale Says:

Stop by my house instead. I’ll offer you a choice of Knob Creek, Bookers, or Woodford Reserve. Or for that matter, a choice from a serious collection of single malt Scotch.

Given that it is charcoal mellowed, Jack is much closer to bourbon than other non-bourbon whiskies.

  7. Phelps Says:

Me, I had always assumed that bourbon meant Wild Turkey. Shirley that didn’t happen at the Fox and Hound. I’d be embarrassed for taking you there.

  8. AlphaPatriot Says:

I tended bar in Texas for a number of years and am shocked at the thought of equating the two. Egads, one is made in Canada!

That being said, I must admit that Jack is commonly referred to as bourbon down there. Not being a bourbon drinker, I don’t see much difference between JD and Jim Beam.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
