Niftiest thing I’ve seen in a bit

Pandora free internet radio. Never thought much about internet radio because I don’t usually listen to music while at a computer. But Pandora has an application for my Blackberry. And I have one of those wireless transmitters for the car stereo. So, I can listen to personalized, commercial free radio in my car. I’m still trying to figure out how they make money, though.

Google-fu

A while back I said to someone I know that works at Microsoft (not saying who, to protect the innocent) that they should release a version of Internet Exploder that has built in adware/spyware/spam protection that, by default, blocks Google ads. Then, they launch their own web ad program. Well, you see where this is going. Anyway, they may someday wish they had taken that advice since Google is getting in on the operating system game.

Also, Google Voice looks to be pretty cool.

Blogs and politics have come a long way

Regarding Lamar Alexander’s inaccurate statements on the guns in national parks bill, Michael Silence and I were having an offline conversation. And I was still telling Michael that the Senator was wrong. And his spokesperson was wrong. Then, Michael quipped:

I just think it’s very cool a US senator has responded to a blogger

You know, that is pretty damn cool. So, hats off to Senator Alexander and his staff. You’re still wrong about the issue but at least you’ll address with bloggers.

if you go on the internet and you criticize the government, the government might start a criminal investigation about you, and we think that’s extremely problematic

Why we win

It’s something I’ve discussed before. In recent years, both houses of congress, justice department, SCOTUS, etc. affirmed the second amendment. More states have concealed carry than don’t. AWB not renewed. And quite a few other pro-gun victories. People seem more friendly to gun owners. And people who have never shot before want to go shooting. Issuance of handgun carry permits is at a record high.

I’ve often attributed it to grassroots activists who, with Al Gore’s internets, seem to have gained a knack for working together. But I’ve also realized something else is having an influence. Cable/satellite TeeVee. In a recent episode of Mythbusters (posted earlier about some safety concerns), Jamie was pulling out a .50 caliber and made a comment about how if you were a gun enthusiast, the 50 caliber was awesome. Then, the show Timewarp did an episode on automatic weapons.

All kinds of educational programs on cable TeeVee deal with weapons and guns. Mail Call, Timewarp, Mythbusters, Tales of the Gun, and there are even hour long shows devoted to the history of a particular gun. People didn’t have this stuff piped into their homes 30 years ago. Now, they do. People became acclimated to guns instead of afraid of them. And people see them and realize what gun nuts knew all along: guns are fucking cool. And when handled appropriately, they’re safe.

I’ll play

Shooting Wire: Blogs are players

The latest shooting wire quotes a mystery blogger:

That aversion was one that led gun bloggers, some of the new power-brokers in the gun world, to run an anti-campaign against a senior Cerberus member’s campaign for a position on the NRA board. After he failed to get elected, one blogger laughingly told me “maybe now they’ll realize if you don’t talk to us, we don’t have any use for you.”

They don’t disclose which blogger and I don’t know who it is. But I don’t actually know that anyone actively ran a Campaign against Kollitides so much as he was just openly not endorsed. This was due to his refusal to do any interviews, not show up at NRA committees he was a member of, and finally because he apparently didn’t even show up at NRA’s annual meeting. Michael Bane says:

Nice to be one of the new power-brokers, as soon as I figure out what that means. You’d think a new power broker could get ammo, wouldn’t you?

Less is more

To cut down on information overload, MKS recommends sixing.

Outing

Another blogger’s secret identity has been revealed. Seems to happen regularly enough. Most outings occur out of spite as opposed to revealing something like their ulterior motives or motivation for their position or other information that could be valuable to a reader. I blog under a pseudonym because of the issue I address: gun rights. And my opponents are some of the most irrational (and often violent) people out there. And given the level of irrationality on the other side, why potentially make my professional life difficult? Who needs the hassle?

Insty says:

I think blogging anonymity is fine — though in the absence of a track record I tend to trust anonymous bloggers less

Rich:

If you don’t have the courage to stand for your convictions, then sit down and shut up.

Kevin:

There are two reasons to identify someone who writes pseudonymously: they claim to be someone they are not and the claim has an overwhelming bearing on the credibility of their writing or to bully someone.

While, as Kevin shows, there are instances in which outing someone serves a greater purpose then I don’t find it that objectionable. I mean, if someone thought that I was, say, the CEO of some big gun company that might have a bearing on my blog. But I’m not. I’m just some guy. Though it seems more people I run into know who I am any way.

Blog Bling

The feds want to regulate blogs. Because some folks give bloggers free stuff and then bloggers may say nice things about their products. Sounds kinda silly. I guess some folks could say that they’ll give you free stuff on the condition that you say nice things. But I’ve never experienced that. I’ve written reviews on various products and books and things. And never felt swayed to lie or anything like that.

Disclosure: Obviously, I’ve gotten stuff for free due to this blog (training with Todd Jarrett, some Blackhawk stuff, books, etc.). But not a single company who’s given me stuff has said that it’s free as long as I write nice things about it. It’s always been understood that I would probably write about it but never once demanded. And I’ve always written about the stuff truthfully. It’s not hard to understand that if a gun nut gets gun things he’s probably going to like the gun things.

Congrats

The Guav and Mrs. Gauv.

Can’t we all just get a long gun?

The thing about bloggers, is we’re opinionated, contrary, confrontational sorts. And gun nuts also tend to be contrary and opinionated. When you put the two together, you’re going to have the occasional conflict. But it seems that we gun bloggers spend a lot of time and effort arguing amongst ourselves. The latest drama is addressed here. And it’s pretty much, I think, a misunderstanding. Now, I’m guilty of some of this gun blog drama myself (see a few posts of mine on the threepers). But I’ve avoided getting involved in these things publicly for a while now. Sure, I generally respond to some folks behind the scenes but airing stuff like that in the open is not constructive. It’s not beneficial. And the effort is better spent gloating about how Josh Sugarmann and Carolyn McCarthy are sad clowns. And these things tend to center around some blogging inside baseball that readers probably don’t care much about.

Seriously, can’t we all just get a long gun?

Congrats

Squeaky’s blog is two.

Bloggers and industry

The National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Bill Brassard writes about the gun blogs:

Mr Jonsson interviewed media experts who confirmed that indeed the bloggers are a significant part of the current sea change in information distribution and consumption. His experience at the NRA show mirrors what NSSF has seen in recent years at the SHOT Show, where the number of bloggers has increased yearly and where NSSF, recognizing their value, provides them with press privileges identical to outdoor and mainstream media.

Gun bloggers were out in such force at the NRA convention that they rivaled mainstream media in attendance, causing Jonsson to observe, “Experts say that ratio at a major national news event featuring a panoply of GOP stars — including John McCain and Mitt Romney — presents a stunning affirmation of the rise of a mix of both partisan and fiercely independent and sometimes downright cranky “New Media,” marking its growing power to not only cover breaking news, but set the tone for political policy — and, in the case of Second Amendment rights, even the direction of the NRA itself.”

NRA and online communities

A post on how AR15.com helped change NRA. Joe DeBergalis was elected. He had support from blogs and AR15.com. Partially because he made himself available to forum guys and bloggers. He posted comments at both.

The AR15.com post doesn’t mention that their other endorsement of George Kollitides came in just about last place (supposedly. I’ve not confirmed that yet – but will). Kollitides was not exactly well-received by the a lot of the gun bloggers. Mostly because he didn’t interview, engage anyone, and his entire ‘campaign’ was a puff piece in an NRA magazine. And, surely now, his ties to Chrysler would be a detriment.

Gun blogging in the Christian Science Monitor

The Christian Science Monitor is istorically anti-gun and not bashful lying about gun issues. There was that time they told us, for instance, that Obama’s views on guns lined up with yours and that time they lied about Florida’s gun laws and that time they advocated the gun industry create it’s own licensing and registration system. In fact, here’s a whole list of mentions of their anti-gun hackery on this blog. The list is long.

Anyway, I was a bit odd to see they were at the NRA convention. And writing about gun bloggers:

But here’s the real news: In the press box, bloggers outnumbered national reporters by a good margin. And officially, nearly 50 bloggers — compared to 100 mainstream print journalists — were accredited by the NRA press office to attend the 138th annual convention.

Excellent. But, really, there is no need for the press to show up? They’ll take dictation from the Brady Campaign or just reprint their documents as news items.

Who’s a sad clown:

“If you compare the pro-gun activity in the blogosphere versus the pro-gun-control activity, the scales have just tipped tremendously in their favor,” says Josh Sugarmann, founder of the Violence Policy Center in Washington, which advocates for more gun control in the US. “There’s much more engagement, more involvement, and they clearly have more free time than people on our side of the issue do.”

And you know what’s amazing? We do it on our own time. Josh Sugarmann is a reasonably well paid shill for an anti-gun group. And the only results from his efforts I see are a Huffington blog and google searches passed off as studies. What’s even more amazing is if you look at the list of goofs the VPC has made, you have to wonder how the press can lend them any credibility. I mean, assuming they don’t have an agenda.

It seems that Reasoned Discoursetm could be in play.

Update: Comments are showing up now. Blog software approval.

Bleg updates

It occurs to me I use this site to get advice from readers. However, I am remiss in updating you on what I did. So, here you go.

Holster Beg: I just ordered a CompTac MTAC. The reason is that it seems similar to the Crossbreed but I can order new bodies for different guns.

Blu Ray: Haven’t gotten one yet. Still pondering.

Killing wasps in the attic: I consulted an exterminator. He said use a fogger. Most foggers don’t advertise killing wasps and bees. But he said that any fogger that kills ants or fleas is also good for stinging critters. So, I got up early in the morning when the wasps weren’t active. This does a couple of things. First, they’re unlikely to sting me since they’re sleeping. Next, it ensures that I kill them all and not just the ones that happen to be in the nest while the others are out scouting for food. I put two foggers (Raid Max) in the attic. Then, I waited a couple of days. And I went up and finished the nest off with a whole can of Raid Wasp Spray. Ok, I lied. I hate bugs and paid someone to go spray the nest directly. But I did put the foggers in the attic.

So, there you go.

Gillibrand on guns

Top-notch and credible news source prison planet reports that Gillibrand will introduce an assault weapons next week. It’s based on this article in which McCarthy says she’ll introduce one. And by she, McCarthy means McCarthy. And McCarthy is in the house and Gillibrand is in the senate. So, don’t put too much faith in the crack reporting from Alex Jones’ minions. Granted, Gillibrand has been a disappointment to gun owners. Wonder how NRA will grade the A-Rated senator in the coming years?

I am a bad Twitterer

I’m so bad, that twitterer is probably not what they’re called.

See, I started a Twitter account. Now, it’s just a re-print of stuff I post here. Nothing more. I don’t even read my own twitter account. Apparently, I have followers on twitter. But I don’t really know what that means. And I don’t follow anyone. Nothing personal but I 1) don’t get twitter; 2) don’t even read my own account; and 3) don’t even know how to follow people or what that’s for. Does that make me a rude twitterer?

Also, it seems that a few of my ‘followers’ are spammers.

Also, can we stop with the articles on how twitter is going to either save media or be the end of it? It’s not that great.

Update: Speaking of articles on twitter saving everyone, here’s one right on cue.

Twitter: blogging for lazy people.

Update: Ok, I’m informed I can track my twitter-fu by this RSS feed. Thanks to bitter.

Bleg: Al Gore’s Internets

My desktop computer which is attached to a wireless router via a cable cannot access the internet. Ok, it can. But no matter who is logged on or which browser, it says it’s connecting and eventually times out. I can still ping sites and have tried to release/renew IP address. Rebooted the PC, the modem, and the router. And nothing.

Oddly, the laptop which connects only via wifi works fine. Hence, this post. Any ideas?

Update: Turns out, it was overzealous Norton internet security settings. Disable that and it works. Odd because I never changed those settings. All better now.

In the future please ignore these Trolls as their comments will get removed.

Looks to be going the same way as all their other online endeavors:

The Brady’s also have a page on Facebook that has a forum for people who “join the group”. The majority of the posts and threads are by pro-gun advocates w/ nary a Brady supporter to be heard.

So if ‘gun control’ is so popular, where are the supporters?

And more on the anti-gunners lack of internet success here. The still have their parrots in the press though.

Lies or ignorance?

Regardless, they call it Raw Story because it’s never well done:

Seven million people have applied for criminal background checks since November in an effort to buy guns, according to the FBI. That figure doesn’t include Virginia, whose gun shows don’t require any background checks.

Yon Continues Parroting Mexican Gun Canard

Once more, with feeling.

Yon is still bitterly clinging to the Mexican Gun Canard. When he’s not calling us fanatics for pointing out facts and stuff, he’s happily parroting talking points that have been proven false. The latest is Yon’s re-publishing a rebuttal to a FoxNews piece by Todd Bensman. You see, you should take Todd’s word for it because Yon knows him. And he’s a great guy who probably likes puppies. Only, he’s a great guy who happens to be full of shit:

The notion that 90 percent of the guns recovered from Mexican cartels can be traced to US retailers derives from hard ATF trace statistics. The majority of the recovered guns that are traced – not all are – have been traced to American retailers, unless the ATF is just making it all up, and no one has even alleged such a thing.

The article in question from FoxNews is here. The article addresses the claim that 90 percent of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico come from the United States. And the reason why that claim is false is because it is derived from the ATF stating that 90% of the weapons ATF traces came from the US. In other words, only 90% those guns ATF is asked by Mexico to trace originate here. Not 90% of all guns.

Bensman continues:

Then offered as proof one of the most minuscule slivers of the total seizure take: some military weapons that came from Guatemala. It’s the height of intellectual dishonesty- and terrible analytical thinking – to lump this tiny fraction of military weapons in with the much larger UNtraced group of firearms and call them the same, that they came from Israel and China. That’s what this Fox reporter did and to someone knowledgeable like me shows how horribly he was manipulated.

That has little to do with the debunking the 90% stat but I find it interesting. Whenever you read the news, they show pics of LAW, RPGs, beltfed machine guns, grenades and other military hardware. And imply such weapons are coming from the US and its gun shows. Pointing out that they are not is valid.

Now, I have no doubt that guns are getting into Mexico from the US. But not 90% of them; not the military hardware they show us on the TeeVee news; and the issue is overstated. The AK-47s the gangs are using are not coming from the US either.

That’s what this Yon guy is repeating and, to someone knowledgeable like me, shows how horribly he was manipulated.

Clenched fist salute to Unix Jedi.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
