Ooo. I love playing “Guess the dog”! So, I’m going to guess, considering the size and weight at only a year old, some kind of mastiff mix. I’m going to guess a mastiff, lab mix, though I’m not sure either of those dogs will throw a brindle pup, so maybe some kind of mastiff, lab, pit/boxer mix?

  2. Chris Byrne Says:

Well, given that he’s my dog, should I tell y’all or let you guess for a while?

  3. SayUncle Says:

I was going to go with Catahoula, until I saw the weight.

  4. SayUncle Says:

and, chris, you can tell me.

  5. SayUncle Says:

Might go with Rhodesian Ridgeback. Final answer.

  6. Moose Says:

Looks almost like a fila brasileiro

  7. deadcenter Says:

I’m with B. When I saw the brindle color I thought mastif. Looking at the face I thought lab. Lab/mastif. final answer!

  8. Molon Labe Says:

When I saw the puppy pix, I thought Boxer. When I saw the BIG puppy pix, I thought Mastiff.

Therefore, I’m going with Boxer/Mastiff mix.

  9. Benz Says:

I immediately thought Rhodesian Ridgeback …

  10. Nomen Nescio Says:

ridgebacks come in brindle? ooh, too bad i can’t fit a third dog into the house…

  11. Chris Byrne Says:

Just gotta say, so far no-one has even been close.

Oh and no fair any of our friends who know directly, coming in and spoiling the fun.

  12. Josh Says:

Brindle Staffordshire with a lil’ Neopolitan Mastiff mixed in for size and color?

  13. Aunt B. Says:

I have to admit, I cheated and looked at the comments over at Chris’s, because I just couldn’t stand it any more, but even then, I feel like I only got half an answer. Please don’t leave us hanging, Chris.

  14. BobG Says:

Judging from the top picture with the hat, I’d say a Gay Mastiff.

  15. Peter Says:

My guess is that it’s a ‘scratch my ears and what’s for dinner’, and a purebred one at that.

  16. Chris Byrne Says:

Ok, I figure that’s all the mileage he’s going to get…

Jayne was sired by a 120lb AKC standard coated Rotweiller, on a 90lb fawn coated AKC American Staffordshire terrier, as a deliberate hybrid, by someone who breeds as a lifestyle (not as a hobby or as an income generating business. It’s pretty much his entire lifes pursuit).

He was one of 5 pups, 4 dogs and 1 bitch. The bitch bred true to her dams coat, and the dogs were all brindled to some degree.

And yes, both his sire and his dam were (are actually) EXTREMELY large examples of their breed. That’s why they were bred together, because the guy loved his two biggest, and wanted to see how great (and big) their pups would be.

Honestly, he is about as even a mix of traits as I’ve ever seen in a mixed breed dog. Other than being a chewer though, he’s about as great a dog as could ever be wished for.

  17. Chris Byrne Says:

Oh the bitch was fawn coated with seal points. Kind of like a Ridgeback.

  18. DJK Says:

Can I play? What kind is MY dog? We really don’t know…

  19. Chris Byrne Says:

Rhodesian Ridgeback, mixed with either a boxer, or an American Staffordishre terrier.

  20. Barb Says:

The dog definately looks boxer/mastiff mix. I have one out of a litter of 11. There was quite a few puppies in the litter that look like the dog (as a puppy) in the picture. My puppy has the fawn coloring with a black muzzle.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
