IMHO, there's no such thing as a "accidental" shooting. Guns no more "accidentally" shoot than they commit crimes. When that officer's pistol went off it was from either negligence or willful intent, PERIOD!

I've been shooting since 1963, when I was 7 years old, and I've never had a gun fire when I didnt intend for it to do so and that's because I obey the 4 rules.

1. All firearms are always loaded.
2. Always keep a firearm pointed in a safe direction.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
4. Always be sure of your target and know what is behind it along the bullet's trajectory.
I add "know your weapon" to that list.

Unless that shooting was intentional, and I would'nt be surprised if it was, then the cop violated rules 2,3,and 4. And some people think that us gun owners should have the same level of firearms training that cops get? That would be a severe lowering of standards in my case.

Reminds me of one of my favorite dark-humor qoutes:

"We would have believed it was an accidental shooting, if you hadn't changed magazines... Twice"

Should have filed this one under "Just like you and me, only better." Because I am pretty sure if I were in that cop's place, the only way I would see my wife and kids again for a long time would be through several inches of plexiglass at the county jail.
