Quote of the day

Les Jones:

The founding fathers were wise enough to keep the government out of religion, but not wise enough to keep the government out of education.

Well, I don’t think they’d have imagined it would come up.

Actually, Jefferson was an early proponent of public education. The concept was not unknown to the founders, and many of them were proponents of it, not just Jefferson. Modern libertarians tend to make the mistake of believing the founders were libertarians, when they weren’t really. Jefferson himself believed that public education promoted the health of the Republic. Unusual for his time too, he also believed in the importance of educating women as well as men.

They were wise enough to keep non-whites, non-males, and non-landowners out of education…

    And the Irish!

Jefferson et al apparently never dreamed that the education establishment would become a de facto branch of government, just like religion had done in centuries past and does so still. It seems so obvious today.

Public schools would, after all, be committing suicide by teaching the virtues of a free market and of Liberty. It would be like crack dealers advocating hard work, responsibility, and a drug-free life.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
