About as useful as a ‘no guns’ sign

There’s a noted increase in bank robberies. If I ran a bank, I’d probably hire some more guards or put in more cameras. But a bankers association has a pretty dumb idea:

Responding to a more than one-third hike in bank robbery, the Florida Bankers Association is urging its members to adopt new rules.

Not additional guards or cameras, but a dress code for customers.

The group rolled out a “No Hats, No Hoods, No Sunglasses” program, which includes lobby signs asking customers to remove those items before approaching a teller.

Those who refuse would be directed to an area with more security or a more experienced teller.

Yes, because robbers will comply with those directions.

I’d tell them to just direct me to the window where accounts are closed. No ifs, ands, or buts. I’d take my business to a bank not run by idiots.

Hmmm. Any guesses whether they have a ‘no burkas’ policy?

You can’t tell people what to wear and expect to continue in business.

I guess they never heard of bank takeovers, have they?

Or robbers that just walk in and, uh, rob?

What about fake beards or contacts that change the color of the eyes or elevator shoes or…

Stupid is as stupid does I guess.

  5. SandH Says:

Now hold on folks. You’re underestimating just how stupid a criminal can be. Read down a bit on the story and you’ll find this:

“It has worked in other states. Missouri, for example, reportedly saw a 47 percent drop in bank heists after adopting it in 2002.”

Apparently a person stupid enough to rob a bank really is stupid enough to think that he can’t go in with his hat, hoodie, and sun glasses without getting in trouble.

  6. Dustin Says:

LOL! Why don’t they just put up a sign that says “If you’re here to rob the bank, please walk to the secure area to the right & inform one of the security guards – failure to cooperate will result in the closing of your bank account”

  7. HardCorps Says:

why do they give a shit if they’re robbed? All of their profits are secure and they are just dealing in numbers on a screen now anyway. Soon, anyone who uses cash will be labeled a terrorist or criminal, and the banks won’t have to worry about filling out insurance claims from hold ups.

Actually, my credit union has this policy and I’ve seen it in action. A fellow walked in wearing sunglasses and a hoodie (not unusual here in CA) but didn’t remove them. Before he got ten feet into the bank my teller sang out “Please remove your glasses and hood, sir!” He stopped cold, looked confused for a second, then LEFT. Meanwhile, I noticed that my teller’s hand had moved VERY quickly to a different position behind the counter — presumably hovering over the alarm button.

    Anyway, I think it works.

  10. Ravenwood Says:

    David,

And what happens if she signals said alarm because a paying customer didn’t jump quickly enough when she barked her orders??

Sending people to death camps works too, doesn’t mean you should.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
