• Use of any illicit drug dropped approximately 24%.
• Marijuana use decreased approximately 25%.
• Steroid use dropped by approximately one third.
• Ecstasy use dropped approximately 54%, cutting usage down to less than one half of what it was in 2001.
• Methamphetamine use decreased approximately 64%.

Seems they’re just switching. I forget, it’s the war on some drugs.

This might be able to be summed up as “executive branch cooks-the-books.”
Unfortunately there’s little out there to explain the methodology of the study, but I think it’s a survey. So this seems to just continue the downward trend, since 1998 or so, of kids perhaps not trusting the anonymously of a survey that’s funded by the goverment. They may have somehow controlled for that in the survey, but I don’t see how they could do that.

Actually, it’s not that hard to do. It’s taught in every Master’s level survey statistics course. I won’t bore you with the mechanics unless you want me to.
That’s not to say it was done on this survey, though. There’s a ton of badly done surveys.
But I did want to say this: the rise in painkillers does not seem to me to be enough to offset the declines in all the other drugs. So, only some are switching. Most everyone else is abandoning. This is undoubtable a good thing.
To the main point though, that doesn’t make it the best thing.
