Oh, shut up

Let the adults talk: 12 Surprisingly Offensive Words You Need to Erase from Your Vocabulary

OMG the rule of thumb one.

. These laws are said to have stated that a man could beat his wife with any stick no wider than his thumb. Hence, the rule of thumb. Scholars have searched but they can’t find any precise proof for this origin. That doesn’t mean that domestic violence isn’t a problem.

    What in the potato?

  2. Jeffersonian Says:

    Yuck.

  3. Shrimp Says:

Gee, I wonder why nobody reads Reader’s Digest anymore….

  4. Jay Dee Says:

This is a fine example of idiot-signalling; i.e. I am a really useful idiot.

  5. Ravenwood Says:

Gotta keep the euphemism treadmill rolling along.

Calling someone retarded didn’t used to be offensive.. but now apparently it is. So they come up with new words to replace the old ones. Pretty soon they’re offensive and we need even newer words.

    Lather, rinse, repeat.

  6. Ellen Says:

There is something terribly wrong with anything or anybody whose name has to be changed every five or ten years to erase the – connotation – the previous word gathered.

  7. John Hardin Says:

    Oh, they can just FOAD.

Whoops! That might offend somebody! I better not say it!

Gee, I wonder why nobody reads Reader’s Digest anymore….

    +1

  8. Joe Hooker Says:

Can’t speak to the rest but the bit about rule of thumb being about wife beating is bogus and has been debunked numerous times. It’s an urban legend and has been around for over a hundred years, but has never been part of the common law or any other western legal system (wife-beating is permitted under the sharia, however).

The actual rule of thumb is simple — the width of a man’s thumb is about an inch, so it makes a quick and dirty ruler. That’s all it means.

  9. Daniel Schwartz Says:

At least part of the article is bogus. “Ghetto” does not date back to WWII; various European countries had had ghettos for hundreds of years. (You can read about them in histories of the Black Death, for example.)

Between that, and the numerous uses of “some experts say” and “it is believed that”, I can’t take ANY of that article seriously.

If you want to be offended, no doubt you’ll find something or other to offend you. Enjoy. But don’t go insisting that I be offended too.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
