Don’t dig the rig

Not planning on taking over for Greg’s very useful series Don’t Dig the Rig. But I’ve been enjoying the Amazon show Bosch. It’s good. You should watch it. But here’s his carry rig:

The good: He’s using Kydex. And that’s about it. Holsters should be harder material. Soft leather holsters have lead to guns discharging in the holster because the holster wore out.

The not good:

He needs a good sturdy belt. Not something off the rack at Target.

A 1911. Limited capacity and heavy. Please start carrying any black plastic guns not made by Springfield or Taurus in 9mm that carry all the bullets.

Placement of his gun and mag carrier seem a bit odd.

And his magazines are backwards. Remember, front towards enemy.

Actually, if he’s going to carry the mags that far back, that’s workable. He’s going to grab them with the thumb along the back of the mag. You can’t really come down on the top of the mags when they’re back there the way you do when the mags are toward the front.

IIRC, the original book character carried some sort of S&W 9mm auto. (Not an M&P. The books pre-date the current M&P by a good bit.) Not sure if the author cared enough to specify the model.

$50 says he carries ‘field notes’ in his edc.

There are a number of double stack 1911s. And there have been for some time. It’s not like it’s a secret government project or something.

STI even makes a polymer frame 1911 if you are too girly to carry a real gun.

Alien Gear gun belt! Best belt I’ve ever owned.

  5. Jon Says:

Carrying any gun is better then carrying no gun 😉

That said, do remember since he is a character on a TV show, his gun will hold *however many bullets are required for the scene*

Drives me crazy when I count on a firearm I am familiar with and realize they needed to reload like… oh, five shots ago – but that’s Hollywood.

  6. John Ellis Says:

More about the guns in the series.

I’ve read most of the books; never seen the TV show.
In the books, Bosch is left-handed.
Hope I didn’t ruin it for anyone.

  8. Dave L. Says:

I was watching season 4 last night. In the scene where he visited the LAPD evidence storage, he actually signed the form with his left hand.

But he still shoots right handed. Maybe TV Bosch learned in the Army, and they taught him right handed because he right eye dominant? (Also, it’s hard to carry a 1911 if you’re left handed unless you’ve added an ambi safety.)

  9. John W Ellis III Says:

In the books, the author made a big deal about him being left handed. Even wrote in a bit about a grateful citizen giving him a left handed 44 Magnum. If one exists in the real world, I’ve not heard of it.

  10. Patrick Says:

Haven’t watched the show since little kids showed up to ruin all adult TV time, but I wonder if that scene included him reaching into his pocket?

The production teams generally plan every scene and prop meticulously. Would not be surprised they positioned the gun at the 5 o’clock position to make it easier for him to reach his hand into his pocket at 3 o’clock. Car keys?

Prop masters know a lot about guns, but no surprise if the scene director just wanted it there to make it look better. Source: My wife used to work at a big studio that makes lots of TV cop (and SciFi) shows and movies.

  11. Old 1811 Says:

    Dave L.:
Could be. In the books, Bosch is a Vietnam-vet tunnel rat. Several of the books talk about the 1911 he carried there.
Mr. Ellis: Yes, I remember that. There’s also a scene where he turns in a gun at the border to go to Mexico, and keeps the one he wants to use down there. The copper at the border town PD thinks it odd that a left-handed cop would hand him a gun that’s “balanced for a righty,”
So apparently the book Bosch wears his holster on the left side.
Life is so full of mystery.

Say… what’s wrong with Springfield Armory? I’m not being snide. I really want to know. I’ve been using a 9mm Tactical (just an extended barrel) for several years, and never had a problem with it. Also use a CZ-85. Just wondering.

  13. David H. Says:

Bosch is a great show because… it’s a modern, film noir, LAPD mystery, not because it gets all of the tacticool bits right.

    True on the belt.

Amazing how we all survived carrying 7+1 1911’s for decades. How did we do it??? Long history of the 1911 with the LAPD, and I assume that’s all there is to it, not a tacit recommendation for tactical superiority.

(Trying to post – hope it doesn’t turn out to be a duplicate.)

  15. Will Says:

It’s possible the actor has his gear positioned in those odd locations due to his pants belt loop locations. Good gear tends to have a slot in their mount to accommodate a belt loop, but he might not notice that. Moving forward would put his gear at 3:00 and 9:00, which he might not like.
That’s got to be uncomfortable sitting, especially in a car.

  16. Chas Says:

    “Amazon shoe Bosch”

OK, you made me look that one up, trying to figure out the “shoe” part. I don’t watch much TV as you might guess.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
