A gun dealer has been found guilty of, well, lots of things. Seems he conspired with some police to get department letterhead to procure machine guns for them. And there are laser sights only available to law enforcement? And that’s an FDA reg? Anyone know anything about that.

Well the power of a laser is limited for “health” reasons, and so it could be FDA. Dunno. Doesn’t matter, don’t care. There are DBAL type setups that are LEO/MIL only. EOTech makes an awesome one, with both IR and visible lasers and illuminators, and I want one, but they’re LEO/MIL only. They’re all ITAR restricted too of course, even the peasant-legal ones, so rather than buy them our enemies will have to wait for our military to give them away, which was probably several years ago by now.

“Lasers” for general sale have a 5mw power limit (21CFR1040.11, adapted to a rule of thumb “5mw” – this seems to map to Class IIIa), to prevent idiots from blinding people, basically.
If you go above Class IIIa power levels you’re under a ton of extra requirements for safety interlocks and warnings, which the first example I found (a Beamshot TRIZM) has; that product is a class IIIb laser; IIIb being the first level higher than IIIa.
(* Because Government, FDA has jurisdiction because it’s “radiological health”… look, I don’t make this stuff up, okay?)

(Unlike machineguns, it’s absolutely legal for You, Joe Person, to possess a laser more powerful than Class IIIa, all you want.
It’s just illegal to sell one as a pointing device, or without the required safety features.)

My guess why they’re FDA regulated is their medical use. Like in LASIK and hair removal and stuff. Also the FDA seems to want its fingers in every pie.

Then there are guys that lose their business and livelihood out of pure and well-founded fear, for doing nothing wrong at all. All FFL’s should be mindful, these agitators are known to want them and us dead.

Seems I remember your friend Caleb talking about buying a gun shop in that area recently, I’m sure he’s keeping his awareness up as well he should with sneaky little rabble-rousing comments like this one at the end of that story…

The police officers who conspired to violate the law should have gotten the longer prison sentences. They’re the ones who took an oath to uphold the law.
