Life in the future

Oregonians freak out over the possibility they might have to pump their own gas.

The future is stupid.

Yeah, I rarely visit Oregon, and so I’m inclined out of habit to hop out and pump my own gas. Then I get pounced on by an attendant; “Whoa whoa whoa whoa…I have to pump that for you.”

It’s a commie welfare program, which is to say, it’s for the welfare of the commies, druggies, whores, pimps, thieves and Pagans.

My last time in OR (hopefully the last time), in the city of Ontario, I was robbed of a high-end Jerry can, the 40 dollar spout, and the five gallos of gasoline. I suppose that’s another of their welfare programs, just less official.

Better to drive through, if you must, and not stop.

Lyle, I consider the whole left coast (CA, OR, and WA) as a area to avoid.

My first steady job, at age fifteen, was as a pump jockey at a gas station. That was in 1971. There was no such thing as a self-service gas station back then. Not only did I pump the gas, I also cleaned the windows and checked the oil, radiator, and tire pressure. I was not on welfare, a druggie, a commie, a w*ore, a pimp, a thief, or a Pagan.

Lyle’s comment is a sad commentary on the American consumer. For the past four decades the gas companies have been sticking it to us with higher prices and crappier service, and people have gotten to like it and plead for “harder and deeper and no lube next time please”.

That, notwithstanding, people should learn how to pump their own gas. It can’t be that hard if even Lyle can do it.

Simple solution. The market will decide. If enough people are willing to pay more for service, there will be stations who will do so.

If not, well, join the rest of the country. I suspect that will be the case; there’s a reason that full service is gone everywhere it isn’t protected by law.

And yes, this was simple job protection for the lower skilled segment by the State, nothing less. Democratic politicians buying the votes of their core their demographic. What else is new.

There are 2 unique stations near me (in Oklahoma). One is a self serve station with real gas (no ethanol) at 20¢/gallon more. It has a car wash, but not really a convenience store as they can’t compete with QuikTrip. The other is an old school service station (an actual garage – 3 bays – does tires and oil changes, mostly) AND real gas and full service. Their gas is 40¢/gallon more than QuikTrip.

Both seem to survive but neither is booming. I buy mower gas at the first. The second’s customer base is mostly little old ladies (nothing wrong with that) but does a brisk business if the weather is nasty.

“For the past four decades the gas companies have been sticking it to us with higher prices…”

This is wrong. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen the numbers, but when inflation is considered, gas is cheaper than when you (and I) were pump jockies.

The oil companies look like they are robbers ONLY due to the size of the industry. LOTS of money changing hands there. PROFIT, however, is not high, and they are not near the top of recommended stocks to buy. ROI runs about 8%, or less, IIRC.

BTW, you think you could get that same job at 15yo today? Hell no! The Progressives have eliminated jobs for teens.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
