Life in the future

From Netflix:

The one were still scratching our heads about, the person who watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 365 days in a row (streamin me timbers?). An impressive feat, especially as the average member watched around 60 movies on Netflix this year.

I’m not sure what worries me more: that I now know that or that Netflix knows this about someone.

The future is stupid.

Cancelled my account. I don’t patronize companies that ridicule their customers.

It’s pretty much impossible to be Netflix and not know that kind of thing.

Because if you don’t store that kind of thing (even anonymized), you can’t figure out how to run the business, because you won’t know how people even use your product…

My money is on someone turning this on for their dog to watch.

Probably some pirate themed bar in the keys

Either someone leaving something on for the pets (a la Kash’s suggestion) or possibly even just someone who works from home. When I work I like to have some background noise, the sound track is pretty good and I prefer to put something on I’ve seen 100 times before so my attention isn’t drawn to it. If I worked at home all the time, I’d probably have a weird netflix history too.

I have a friend with an autistic child that has to have a certain movie on at all times or he looses his mind. I’m sure they’ve watched it more than 365 days in a row.

It could be like my mom’s last days. she had alzheimers and suffered a stroke, so she was bedridden, and unable to communicate. but she was much more relaxed if the Elvis TV specials were playing-so my dad had them on 24/7 in her room. I still get choked up if I hear Elvis even years later.

hell, I’ve seen Star Wars or Rogue One at least three times a week for the last year; my 7 year old has figured out how to get me to hate something I’ve loved since I was his age.

Still, it’s better than most of the dreck Disney and Nickelodeon are pushing, so perhaps I shouldn’t complain too much. The bloodthirsty little pecker also loves The Longest Day and Dr. Strangelove. My kid is weird.

From around 1983 to 1987, the Dillards store in Post Oak Mall in College Station played “Clash of the Titans” starring Mark Hamill, continuously, on all its display televisions, for every hour the store was open. Just from walking by the TVs once or twice a month I think I saw every scene in the movie, several times, in full.

And from 1990 to about 2000 my kids ran either Star Wars on VHS (Han shot first!) or one of about 5 other movies we had on tape, in the background, while they played with toys.

Repetition has a power all its own.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
