I guess I was wrong

About Disney’s security. I’m fairly certain that I could have carried there easily. I noticed that when folks went to the line where they checked bags, those folks didn’t go through the metal detectors.

    I went through a security line once where I had to pull everything out of my pockets and bag and hold it in my hand whilst they wanded me down. I had my knife, phone, and keys in my left hand while they wanded me and then rifled through my bag.

    I left the check point convinced that I could have been holding a handgun in my left hand and they wouldn’t have noticed.

    What do the security guards want to keep out of the park?
    Trouble.

    That means (probably in prioritized order) they want to stop teenaged-to-25 males who are already drunk or high, mentally unstable people, large containers of alcohol and maybe then people with weapons. I suspect security professionals are aware that law abiding people with weapons aren’t as big a problem as many other demographic subsets of their visitors.

    They can see the drunk guys, the crazies might just freak out going through the security line and be detected, and that gallon of punch isn’t allowed in. There, 95% of the park’s problems are stopped.

    Sometimes security theater is enough.

    According to a friend a work who I sent that article, things have changed in the last year or so, when he last went they had multiple magnetometers and everyone has to go through.

    I do agree with his point that some clothing makes it obvious you are carrying.

    @JNorth:
    I have entered multiple parks in the past year- and security isn’t as good as they say it is. I was in Sea World just last week, despite the fact that they are advertising that all guests must go through magnetometers. See the link at the bottom of this article for information on how I did it.

    Theme park security is so full of holes, it is ridiculous. There is NO way to make a theme park into a sterile environment, what with up to 120,000 people a day coming and going.

    For example, all of the security is located at the front gates. There are ways to get past that, as well as ways to not even enter through the front gate.

    Went to KSC’s visitor center about a month ago, and they put everyone through a magnetometer. Had forgotten to leave my Spyderco Dragonfly (travel knife, basically safe everywhere but manhattan) in the truck and the security folks there looked at it, looked at me, and told me to have a nice day. Of course, I was wearing my nerdiest t-shirt, a bring-back from the NRAO, with a glow-in-the-dark sky map on it, and I was with my wife and kid.

    been to a bunch of hand-egg games this year, and only the one in ATL had metal detectors. Apparently, if you don’t look like a fratboy, there’s not much you can’t sneak in to Bryant-Denny.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
