Mass murderers v. armed citizens

But this never happens:

Engle confronted Samson after he entered the church. Samson pistol-whipped Engle. After Samson shot himself, Engle went to his vehicle, got his own weapon and held Samson at gunpoint until police arrived, police said.

Except when it does.

The narrative in larger media outlets is different.

any word on what firearm the hero used?
based on the careful wording (calling it a weapon instead of ‘handgun” or “pistol”) i’m suspecting a certain rifle…

It’s a great story and Engle deserves every bit of praise that’s coming his way. But as an “armed citizen” story it isn’t very compelling, because he was in fact NOT armed when the bullets started flying. He had to resort to the very dangerous action of confronting a gunman with just his bare hands, precisely because he was NOT armed at the time. The fact that he succeeded — injured, but alive — is very fortunate and rather amazing. But I wish he had been armed from the start so he could have confronted the attacker with a weapon rather than his hands. One wonders (I don’t have enough data to say) whether that would have allowed a faster takedown, leaving fewer good people injured.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
