700 rounds in full auto through a suppressor

That was cool, but I think I would have stopped when the suppressor started to bulge out. I don’t even want to know what happens if the tube deforms or collapses and starts catching bullets.

  2. BDubya Says:

Not to mention that the M249 SAW is not designed to fire 700 round bursts. Aside from melting the suppessor can, the overheat on the weapon barrel could have caused the ammo to start cooking off.
Sustained rate of fire is 100 RPM, which equates to a burst rate of 5 to 7 rounds.

Not sure we should applaud obvious instances of unsafe to stupid operation. And yes, they shot through the can after it lost all tensile strength and drooped into the bullet stream after the heat input got high enough, after about 500 rounds.

  3. Matt d Says:

Man, simple eye protection is what you wear when you DON’T expect anything bad to happen. I’d have been behind a berm pulling a string and looking at a tv screen. Jeez.

  4. nk Says:

It’s the gun I’m impressed with. With the barrel red hot, the action still functioned perfectly.

  5. Lyle Says:

I’m not sure what this proves, but OK. It’s interesting so long as someone else is paying for it.

Whadaya suppose the cost was for that little bit of tomfoolery? 700 waisted rounds, a waisted suppressor and a waisted barrel. Hope they had fun.

But did they HIT the TARGET? If you’re going to burn up all that ammo, you could at least shoot something besides a bullet trap.

    Next time use a Minigun.

So what else can we totally wreck by operating it far outside its design parameters?

  6. JTC Says:

    Marketing fail X3.

    1. The saw that seen it all.
    2. The can that couldn’t.
    3. The ijits that defied logic.

    Can’t buy 1.
    Won’t buy 2.
    Who’d buy 3.

  7. nk Says:

I’ll tell you, I learned something. I didn’t know you could link seven belts for 700 rds continuous feed from a bipod gun. I didn’t even think 200 was doable.

  8. Oleg Volk Says:

My friends and I just tried a similar test with a double-walled suppressor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SJI4iSEQos It worked out better.

  9. SPM Says:

I was always told the SAW was meant to fired in burst as long as it takes to say “Die you dirty bast***” But what the hay!

  10. Ravenwood Says:

That never happened to Arnold in Commando.

  11. Tirno Says:

    SPM,

I saw this video via my Boomershoot partner and former Marine. He said the (as instructed) burst length should be “Die, motherf**ker, die!” but I suppose there can be variations on the theme.

In any event, light machine guns are “light” because the kind of structure required for continuous fire (like water or oil cooling) has been removed to save weight. Doctrinally, the only time LMGs are supposed to used for continuous fire is when your unit is going to be overrun, and ruining the weapon is OK if it repels the attack or renders it unserviceable for use by the enemy.

  12. Drake Says:

Tirno – yep that’s the chant for a 4-round burst.

And ruining a gun like that is how Marines lose stripes and pay when the man gets done with them.

  13. Joe Huffman Says:

    I recognized those guys!

That is the range I go to at lunchtime.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
