Well, that seems pointless
A two inch barrel AR-15:
Not certain what the point is other than BECAUSE I FUCKING CAN. But seeing the bullet sticking out of the end of the barrel is one of the strangest loaded chamber indicators I’ve come across. And it looks to me like dude wasn’t wearing ears. I thought a 10 inch barrel was too loud. I can’t imagine what that would sound like next to my head.

Dangerous toy. But so? I had a Clackers and I was only eleven. Is this any more of a waste than cowboy action shooting?

Seems the same as putting a round in a vise and setting off the primer with a hammer and nail.

I suspect only about 10-20% of the powder actually burned, and likely very little pressure was needed to overcome the crimp.
So burning powder uncontained is quiet, primers are loud, but just “big cap gun” loud, and likely much of the powder payload is scattered on the range.
That being said, he likely had plugs in under that hat, because even if it’s quiet, he’s not the only one shooting.
I have long-barrel .22 rifles, and even supersonic .22 LR out of a 21′ or longer barrel is generally hearing safe, but I rarely shoot them without ears because when I shoot somebody with their braked AR-15 might come in.

Looks like there’s a gas trap near the muzzle. I assume extensive modifications on the bolt carrier and springs have been done to make it make the best of what little pressure enters the gas tube.

Note: If the projectile extends past the muzzle crown, that is the definition of a 0″ long barrel, not a 2″ long barrel. There’s no barrel there. It’s an ex-barrel.
It’s a chamber – period.

@Weer’d: Exactly. The almost non-existent barrel means extremely limited powder burn, which likely minimizes noise.
One of the last times I was at my outdoor club I was shooting 9mm pistols along with rifles in 5.56mm and .300 blk. There was also a gentleman there shooting a smallbore match rifle. Of everything on the line, his rifle was by far the quietest, and it was entirely comfortable to be on the line without ears on when only he was shooting.
@Kevin Baker: It all comes down to the relevant legal definition of “barrel length” — The distance between the breechface and the muzzle with the action closed.
