More bad gun handling from The Walking Dead

When we last saw Dwight on TWD, he was aiming (well not really) a semi-auto handgun using his middle finger on the trigger with his index on the slide. And tonight, here he is gripping his AR-15 by the magazine well and magazine:

Seriously, TeeVee guys, I’ll happily consult on how not to do stupid things with guns.

I frequently grip an AR by the mag/mag well, but don’t tell anyone. It’s an obvious thing sticking out that’s easy to grasp, and so it is going to get grasped. What; you don’t?

  2. RC Says:

That’s the most stunning thing about gun mistakes on TV and in movies, there are thousands, or even 10’s of thousands of people that would consult for nothing or near nothing to keep them from making really stupid, simple mistakes. But no, wouldn’t want anything anywhere near authentic.

  3. Laughingdog Says:

So that you notice, but you didn’t notice Carl trying to sight down a rifle with his missing eye?

  4. SayUncle Says:

I did. But that was more bad acting than gun handling.

  5. Tirno Says:

Well no wonder the Dead are still Walking after so many seasons. These yahoos can’t shoot fer sheeeyut.

  6. KM Says:

Well now I have to watch it again…didn’t catch that the first viewing!

I did notice the Carl aiming thing since I shoot long guns lefty.

  7. Maxwell Says:

Give up. I’ve been trying to pimp myself out as a gun consultant to TV news and local fish-wrappers for decades. Not even a hint of interest.

    They just don’t care.

  8. Deaf Smith Says:

Seriously, I don’t care what TV actors do.

I don’t give a rat’s arse. Maybe gang bangers who watch TV will mimic it and get themselves killed.

    Hope springs eternal.

  9. HL Says:

    Lyle,

I think he is ONLY gripping by the mag-well, no hand on the actual shooty part.

I have been watching Westworld on HBO…I have seen a number of times in the show, even in the opening credits, actually, where the shooter fires a single action pistol without cocking it…instead relying on a long DA trigger-pull.

I realize there are double-action replicas of single action guns…but give me a break.

I think if you are creating a world for “wild-west LARPing”…you’d have actual single action peacemakers.

  10. dustydog Says:

In fairness, they aren’t getting quality instruction during the zombie apocalypse. People figuring out gun safety on their own, should be making mistakes.

I gave up on the Walking Dead about mid way though the first season.

They were at a farm and wanted more guns. The sheriff dude suggests they hit his station’s armory.

[Ok, send someone to a known stockpile, sounds reasonable]

Then I find out it’s like a two hour drive, and they’re in northern Georgia. They make no effort to search the surrounding houses/farms–when every good-ole-boy down there has a couple dear rifles and shotguns. They make no mention of pawn shops to search.

[OK, Hollyweerd stupid, bite tongue and overlook]

Then they get to the sheriff depot and it’s empty. Sheriff dude makes the suggestion to go to the local bar and get the shotgun from behind the bar. “How do you know there’s a shotgun behind the bar?” the dumb-chick asks. “I wrote the permit.” says sheriff dude.

[“You wrote the fucking what?” I said to the TV. You’re in Georgia, there ain’t no stinking permits.]

At which point I quit watching because there’s only so much dumb-fuckery you can overlook in the name of entertainment.

    Deaf Smith:

That’s supposed to be the genesis of the gangsters holding handguns sideways. They were mimicking cops aiming, or actually shooting, handguns while holding a ballistic shield in front of themselves. When you wrap your arm around that to use the sights, you can’t get the gun vertical.

That there was a reason they were forced to hold the gun that way escaped the attention of the low IQ observers.

Which is why I quit watching TV altogether.

  14. Lyle Says:

“Which is why I quit watching TV altogether.”

    Bingo.

Why pay them to insult you at every turn?

  15. Ravenwood Says:

That’s about as smart as spinning up an old factory to make a single round of ammo. (“Make me a bullet!”)

Nevermind there was no mention of where/how he got a brass case, primer, powder, and lead. Then upon scrounging said ingredients, made a single bullet.

  16. Donny Anonny Says:

I quit watching after season 2 when I realized the premise of the show was basically all about what stupid people would do during the zombie apocalypse.

  17. TS Says:

What pissed me off most about that episode is that Carl single handily goes on a mission to kill Negan, then kills two henchman when they go to unload the truck, then says “where’s Negan?”. Then Negan walks around the corner, Carl points the gun at him and doesn’t shoot him. Why aren’t you shooting him! The only reason you came there was to shoot him! Shoot. Him.

Then he proceeds to get himself captured, which is potentially worse than dying (I had to think he considered this a suicide mission to begin with). Then Negan, as he has a habit of doing, gives Carl multiple opportunites to kill him by handing him Lucile and turning his back. Bust his skull, Carl! Why does everyone who wants him dead not kill him when they have a clear opportunity?

How come one of his henchman hasn’t killed him yet for that matter? He hoards all the women, makes everyone kneel before him, and gives his people a hot iron to the face. There isn’t one amoung them to say, “fuck this guy”?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
