What the Hell are you talking about, Weld?

Seen at Tam’s, Libertarian Veep pick Bill Weld:

The five-shot rifle, thats a standard military rifle; the problem is if you attach a clip to it so it can fire more shells and if you remove the pin so that it becomes an automatic weapon, and those are independent criminal offenses, Weld said. That is when they become, essentially, a weapon of mass destruction. The problem with handguns probably is even worse than the problem of the AR15.

Ugh. Flaming ignorance. And this is from supposed Libertarian. Of course, as Tam notes, this ticket is about as libertarian as a moderate republican governor of New Mexico. Oh . . . wait. For the first time I can remember, the Libertarians are the moderates.

Keep voting for him and his gun-trashing running mate, though. You know, because Trump is loud and has a NY accent.

Johnson wants an open border without laws, and praises Clinton as doing a “great job” as Secretary of State. Johnson makes it clear his VP will be addressing his gun control ideals.

You can vote for them with the clean conscience that no way will they ever get to sign any federal antigun legislation, which is something you can’t say about either of the other candidates without your pants catching fire and your nose growing six inches.

  4. JTC Says:

As I alluded when I linked that at your Tactical Bicycle post, that thing is positively festooned with machine guns, just pop in some big shell clips and pull a few pins…and God knows what those handlebar handguns are capable of…good thing GJ’s veep is on top of it.

Helluva advocate for personal freedoms that “libertarian” ticket is…I think Rep. McCarthy and her shoulder-thing comment showed more knowledge.

Technically the same can be said for Jill Stein…

  6. JTC Says:

But, using the criteria espoused by some -let’s call it the Hippocratic Oath standard; candidates who will “first, do no harm” because they’ll never be put in a position to, we’ve got tons of choices.

Of course all of them serve to usher in the one candidate who absolutely positively will use EO’s to convert dozens of alphabet fed agencies into jackbooted domestic armies who will deny your 2A rights by regulation and removal, and pack the scotus with lackeys who will proclaim it all right and proper.

But that’s an inconvenient truth that doesn’t lend itself to snarky bites, and by some kind of definition will leave you with a clean conscience, so…

  7. Mycroft Says:

But Tam, all of the “experts” keep informing us that Trump can’t possibly defeat Hillary. By your criteria, he is a safe bet.

  8. Heath J Says:

Welcome to fuckit-ville. At this point I can’t even use the libertarians as a “vote on principle”

Apparently you didn’t even read the article you linked and quoted, because he makes it very clear that he’s well on his way to a handgun AND AR ban.

You don’t often say stupid shit, but like this, when you do, it’s REALLY stupid.

  12. bob r Says:

@Phelps: Just when is it that you think Weld will ever be in a position to “…sign any federal antigun legislation…”?
Seems to me he’s pretty unlikely to, you know, actually get elected, which would be a prerequisite to “signing any federal antigun legislation.” Which isn’t to say that he wouldn’t like to “sign any federal antigun legislation.”

What does that even mean? Nothing about this statement makes any sense unless I conclude that you don’t mind a tyranny as long as you get to shoot at targets. I urge people to take their love of shooting sports and replace “shooting” with “golfing.” As in I don’t care if the EPA makes me get a permit to cut my yard, at least I still have my golf clubs. It’s stupid sounding.

And as a little bit of inside politics, you third party people, please shut up. You are wasting everyone’s time and it’s pathetic that you don’t know it. Both parties have spent millions of dollars studying how you vote and the conclusion is you don’t. Libertarians are known to go to the polls and not vote for anyone. Greenies are not much different.

Now is a time for a choosing. A time where you will either show the next generation how to shoot, worship, and work independently. Or you can choose the dark unlit path of communism where the government regulates your books (Germans are hiding bibles right now), limit you to one vehicle per house, the time of the day you can have electricity, and like a Venezualan Sunday, eliminate your toilet paper all so you’ll worship at the feet of big government.

  20. JTC Says:

    “Heath wins.”

    Indeed. Succinctly too.

“Trump it is. Burn this motherfucker down.”

Save the Republic or die trying. Same as it ever was for Patriots and Warriors.

  21. Ron W Says:

Back to Weld’s statement, if a military rifle standard is a five-shot rifle, would he apply “the equal protection of the laws”(14th Amendment) and relegate the police and military to that standard? You know, the ones whose EMPLOY to work UNDER our delegated powers?

BTW, the government has no rights, only “the people”.

  22. Sigivald Says:

    VPs don’t make laws.

Johnson, when I saw him talking about it, was pretty direct about not thinking “them scary ARs and handguns is the problem”.

I’m still voting for them, because even if they won I think they’d be better on guns than either Trump or Clinton, among other reasons.

I am not “voting for Trump just to be sure Clinton doesn’t win”, both because I live in Oregon and because that’s exactly why we got the useless GOP we have now.

    It demonstrably doesn’t help.

  23. Phelps Says:

    VPs don’t make laws.

VPs make laws when the vote is 50-50 in the Senate.

Oh, I’m sorry, did I interrupt your being a civics smartass?

  24. JohnnyDerp Says:

Glenn, I’m not sure about residual damage from ‘ludes, but I remember America being a much kinder place before they took them off the market

What I really want to know, is when was the last time the U.S. Military issued a five shot rifle as a standard weapon?

This election cycle, we are truly boned

  25. Ron W Says:

@JohnnyDerp, “What I really want to know, is when was the last time the U.S. Military issued a five shot rifle as a standard weapon?”

Probably WWI and until maybe the M-I rifle, an 8 rd semi-auto was developed and put into service for WW II.

BTW, there wasn’t much reporting on the supposed “assault weapon” used by the Dallas jihadist, murdering perp. He used a WW II relic, SKS. So an AWB wouldn’t include it.

  26. Phelps Says:

BTW, there wasn’t much reporting on the supposed “assault weapon” used by the Dallas jihadist, murdering perp. He used a WW II relic, SKS. So an AWB wouldn’t include it.

That was misreporting. It was an AK-74 with a magpul folding stock and a red dot optic. Still not an AR, though. (If I had done it I probably would have used an SKS to get the 7.62×39. But then, if I did something like that I would use an SKS so I wouldn’t mind dropping it at the scene and exfilling with the crowd.)

  27. Ron W Says:

Phelps, I read a CBS report that it was an SKS, though he had another, I suppose the AK 74. Do you have a source that reports that? It made sense the SKS report was correct because not much was made in the MSM re: the perp’s weapon. But I agree with the idea to use an effective, but cheap, milsurp relic that could be left behind to blend in with the crowd.

  28. Ron W Says:

@Phelps, here’s the link of the report re: the SKS. It was one of first when I searched “Dallas shooter weapon”:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/dallas-guman-shooting-micah-johnson-sks-rifle/

  29. Phelps Says:

    Dude, it’s CBS. Come on.

    http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/dallas-police-ambush/dallas-gunman-micah-johnson-used-saiga-ak-74-assault-style-n608311

Never trust a media story on gun identification without photos.

(Note the correction on the NBC story — they managed to find a way to screw up the correction by calling it an AK-47.)

  30. Phelps Says:

Actually, I could have just stopped at “never trust a media story.”

  31. Ron W Says:

@Phelps, I know. Leftist CBS would’ve preferred it having been an “assault weapon”, not a milsurp WW II relic which isn’t banned under any AWB. You wrote, “it was an AK -74…” So do you have a source for that report??

It seems to me CBS and other MSM would rather report an AK-74 to support their anti-gun narrative and to propagandize for another AWB.

  32. Ron W Says:

Oh, my bad, I see! NBC contradicted CBS. Who do we believe???

  33. Phelps Says:

    We believe the photo.

I think that they would rather report the AK-74 (imported!!!) but they are too incompetent to realize what the real story is.

It’s like the reason that I don’t believe most of the conspiracy theories about Obama — he’s too incompetent to carry out most of the conspiracies. F&F was believable because they screwed it up.

  34. NotClauswitz Says:

I haven’t had a clean conscience since the 5th Grade, maybe earlier.

  35. Linoge Says:

“the Republican candidate is more pro gun rights than the Libertarian.”

    That’s cute.

The Democrat running as a Republican only supports assault weapon bans, three-day waiting periods, and arbitrarily denying rights to people based on some secret list that has “due process” nowhere in its procedure.

  36. Phelps Says:

The Democrat running as a Republican only supports assault weapon bans, three-day waiting periods, and arbitrarily denying rights to people based on some secret list that has “due process” nowhere in its procedure.

Can you argue without lying? It used to be that you could rely on our side to have the facts and their side to rely on lying and misquoting.

    https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions/second-amendment-rights

Gun and magazine bans are a total failure. That’s been proven every time it’s been tried. Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like “assault weapons”, “military-style weapons” and “high capacity magazines” to confuse people. What they’re really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans. Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own.

BACKGROUND CHECKS. There has been a national background check system in place since 1998. Every time a person buys a gun from a federally licensed gun dealer – which is the overwhelming majority of all gun purchases – they go through a federal background check. Study after study has shown that very few criminals are stupid enough to try and pass a background check – they get their guns from friends/family members or by stealing them. So the overwhelming majority of people who go through background checks are law-abiding gun owners. When the system was created, gun owners were promised that it would be instant, accurate and fair. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case today. Too many states are failing to put criminal and mental health records into the system – and it should go without saying that a system’s only going to be as effective as the records that are put into it. What we need to do is fix the system we have and make it work as intended. What we don’t need to do is expand a broken system.

  37. Linoge Says:

So he recanted his previous support of “assault weapon” bans. For now. To convince fools he supports the Second Amendment. And it appears to be working.

Nothing about that references his support for waiting periods, nor does it contradict this: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/donald-trump-inclination-terrorism-shouldnt-buy-guns/story?id=39961668

But you go on defending the unjust deprivation of rights under the color of laws. We already know the kind of person you are.

    Blogger Michael Bane said…

So David H, the fact that I know Trump’s sons, that I have talked to them at length about their father’s positions on the Second Amendmend well before the election; the fact that some of my close friends are close to the Trumps and tell me the same thing; the fact that not only does the NRA endorse Trump, but I’ve been at NRA HQ, and they’re extremely happy and excited to be working for him; the fact that Trump’s position paper on guns is the position paper we’ve DREAMED of having in a Presidential election; the fact that Trump has come to us repeatedly to express his support for the Second; the fact that every major 2A activist — people in the trenches, not the Internet Commando Squad — unconditionally support Trump…none of those thing matter…

The fact that Hillary has said she will spend every day in office thinking of ways to kill the gun culture, that she has called for overturning Heller and McDonald and, with an immediate Scotus Appoint she will have the majority to do so (and Bloomberg is already shopping cases to push to the high court). that she will also overturn the protection of lawful commerce act, the only thing thspat kept the gun industry from being bankrupted by kawsuits — do you have any FREAKIN’ idea how close we came to losing that? I do…I was there. She wants to ban assault weapons…go read the MA Attorney General’ ruling today to see how that will work. She wants a federal law ending concealed and open carry of firearms. She has called for the implementation if the Bloomberg model “universal backgroud check law,” which 2A attorney Andrew Branca has call a disaster with the power to destroy the gun culture…Branca has listed numerous thing Hillary can do on her own, without Congressional approval. And she will act.

And you’re having trouble seeing a difference?

  39. Phelps Says:

Will, Trump is the best litmus test of character we’ve seen so far. Rats fleeing a sinking ship tells you exactly who the rats are.

  40. JTC Says:

Phelps, it’s worse than that. A rat that flees a sinking ship is just a rat doing what rats do.
A rat that actively gnaws the hole that sinks the ship is a whole ‘nother thing.

Best to ID those rats who are not only cowardly rats but destructive and traitorous rats and call them out, or just watch and wait for them to expose themselves…like happens about every time some here put fingers (paws?) to keyboard.

  41. Linoge Says:

    Bless your hearts.

For me to flee a sinking ship – and it’s good of you to acknowledge that the Republicans are a dying party – I would first have to be *on* the sinking ship.

I never was. And, thankfully, I never will be.

This is me, on the shore, pointing and laughing at your paltry and ineffective flailing. Best of luck with that.

And, yes, Bane is a damned sellout for buying into the Trump/NRA plan of unjustly denying rights to people placed on secret lists without any due process or trial involved. I’m not sure what your appeal to authority was supposed to do, JTC, but it failed miserably.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
