A 73-year-old retired librarian playacting as a victim in a “shoot/don’t shoot” exercise at a Florida police community event was shot and killed Tuesday night by an officer who mistakenly fired live ammunition instead of blank rounds, according to Punta Gorda, Fla., police.

Disciplinary action? Fired? Criminal charges? Nope, none of those things, but, at least he won’t be the one that gets to go the man’s house and shoot his dog for him.

I have no doubt the cop (it has been done before and OTHER cops shot dead in such situations) took the simulations out of the gun and loaded it with live ammo before going to lunch. THEN when he got back, swapped mags and forgot he had a real live round in the chamber.
But you are right, WHY NOT SIMULATION GUNS that can’t take real ammo? Are they that cheap?

When we practiced retention and whatnot in hand-to-hand, we used a kid’s toy cap gun from Wal Mart. It still went “bang” but could never fire a real live round no matter what you did to it. It only cost a few dollars too, so if you broke it you’d go out and buy a few more and no one was put out by it.

Jon-Erik Hexum was killed by a blank. There are reasons Hollywood armorers worth their salt also follow rule one, even on prop guns.

It’s involuntary manslaughter, youse guys. And that’s giving the cop the benefit of every doubt. People have been convicted of first degree murder with a “I didn’t know the gun was loaded” defense.

Looks like a revolver to me. Maybe they thought it was a starter pistol? And the other one pictured looks like a simunitions pistol.

Negligent homicide is when you try to unload your Remington 700 by working the bolt and it happened to be pointing at your hunting partner when it went off, like some of the pre-1973 Remingtons were wont to do. I was involved in the defense of a case like that. This is worse.
