Unsafe

I know this is a common practice in certain shooting events but it probably isn’t too smart:

I also hate the magnetic things to lean your gun against side of vehicle.

  2. cryptical Says:

The shotgun is open when you rest it on your foot. Pretty common for trap shooters.

  3. Fred Says:

    Bad habit.

  4. Skullz Says:

Bad habit? Maybe – but you’ll be thrown off the trap line and probably your squad if your gun is closed before its your turn to shoot.

Not to mention that I can’t see a comfortable way to rest the barrel of you 28″ – 34″ shotgun on your foot without having the action open on a break-open gun. A semi or pump just wouldn’t work, I would think.

There’s a common saying, often signage at the trap ranges “Open or Out”, meaning if the action is closed and you’re not shooting, you’ll be invited to leave.

I was gonna say they should call it the Toe Target, but while I don’t see why a non-break or un-broke gun couldn’t be rested on it, if the range rule is that stringent, that would seem okay.

Of course that means single or double guns only, no non-break guns allowed? I did not know that. Buncha Fuddy duddy bigots. 🙂

  6. Fred Says:

Yep, maybe I should have said; if you like to play commando in the woods with ARs then a toe rest might not be something you want programmed into muscle memory.

  7. Skullz Says:

Well…. Pump and semi autos are allowed, and the same rule applies in regards to the action needing to be open when not shooting. I’ve been shooting trap for about 8 years, and I can’t remember ever seeing a pump or auto resting on someone’s foot while on the line – not that it couldn’t happen.

I’m also a fan of Darwinism, though.

I would also posit that trap and skeet shooters in PA probably fire more rounds in a year than all the other disciplines combined, and I’ve never heard of someone blowing their foot off. Shooting the trap house? Yep.

The PA state shoot just finished up yesterday. The week saw over 1600 shooters and 3.1 million targets. That’s just 1 week, at 1 club.

The guys in the woods? Most of them have slung rifles. I’d say there’s more of a chance of ventilating their “buddy”, than their own foot.

an open double barrel on the toe seems close to one slung over the shoulder IMO and that’s a pretty standard way to carry one

  9. LKP Says:

Not only no but hell no. I like my feet, they haven’t tried to mug or kill me.

  10. Gerry Says:

I shot trap for years with an 870 TB. Action open but never resting on my foot.

I have a friend that still has the semi circle blown off his big toe and the next where his shotgun discharged while on the tip of his boot. I think I may buy him one of these for the laugh value, it was over 20 years ago when it happened.

    This is what I use:

    Also here:

These are the best prices I found in a brief search. (take a look around searching for “Foxy’s Foam Magnetized Gun Rest”)
Use the magnet end to have it stick to the gun when moving from one station to the next, use the foam part between shots on the line.

I like these not because I think there is a huge safety issue involved but because I usually wear white tennis shoes and don’t want carbon on them.

There are also these but I haven’t used them:

Am I the only one who who wonders; “Why not butt on the foot or butt on the ground?”

I’ve been to quite a few school trap shoots as my son was on the local high school team, and I don’t recall anyone ever resting the muzzle on the foot, or on anything else.

Also; if you’re a goddamned safety Nazi you want to stay clear of any trap shoot in the Inland Northwest. You’d have a heart attack after about ten minutes, but the participants would just laugh at you; they practically never have an incident. I haven’t heard of an accidental shooting at a trap meet in decades, and as was stated above; they go through more rounds than just about anyone, AND you won’t find an event with more shooters present outside a national event.

You’re about a thousand times more likely to have a car accident on the way to or from the event, than to be accidentally shot at the event. So if you don’t like it, then simply fuck off and stay out of your car.

It seems to me that the safety Nazis (and lawyers) have gotten us doing some strange things, based purely on the fear of litigation. Puppets, meet the puppet-masters. Now dance.

I like the flash hider, or as I refer to it, the muzzle protector. I often rest my AR and M1A muzzles on the floor, or other hard surfaces (still gotta watch out for mud and snow though). I suppose some range geek would admonish me for that. Ask me if I give a fuck.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
