More astroturf inbound

CNN:

Retired U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, who has long resisted calls to run for political office, is teaming up with retired NASA astronaut Mark Kelly to create a new group urging greater gun control.

The two announced on Friday that they were launching Veterans Coalition for Common Sense to encourage elected leaders to “do more to prevent gun tragedies.” The group will feature veterans from every branch of the military who are urging lawmakers to toughen gun laws, the organization said in a news release.

Well, OK.

As service members, each of us swore an oath to protect our Constitution and the homeland. Now we’re asking our leaders to do more to protect our rights and save lives,” said Kelly, the husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and co-founder of Americans for Responsible Solutions, a group that advocates for tougher gun laws.

Oh, you did? I see what an oath means to you.

  1. SD3 Says:

Curious. Apparently the good general & I took different oaths.

  2. JK Brown Says:

Yes, my oath had that all enemies foreign and domestic. And if the general is confused, domestic enemies are those who seek to usurp the Constitution by claims of protecting the homeland or as I prefer to call it, the nation that the Constitution is the sovereign of.

  3. Fûz Says:

In earlier days I would have submitted that the good general is getting leaned on for some form of public service, so he otherwise stays quiet over Hillary’s misuse of CLAS.

Win win win for the Donks.

Not sure I’d believe that now, just a first impression.

  4. Dave Says:

“…and will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.”

They are a disgrace to the uniform and to the officer corps. Piss on them.

  5. Erik Says:

Hey General Jabroni, who was protecting the constitution while you were chasing skirts?

  6. Jerry The Geek Says:

    No.
I understand that The General has had some personal issues which have tarnished his good name.

But I refuse to accept that these have detracted from the decades of True and Faithful Service which have made him an icon to those of us who appreciate his contributions to the defense of our country.

Jerry: “I refuse to accept that …personal issues.. have detracted from … his contributions to the defense of our country.”

Good men can screw up big-time. Not-so-good men can perform miracles.

Which is he? I can’t tell from here.

  8. KM Says:

    Dave is right.
They are liars, political whores and a complete disgrace to the United States that they swore to defend.
    Fuck Betrayus and Kaptain Ken.

@Jerry – But I refuse to accept that these have detracted from the decades of True and Faithful Service which have made him an icon to those of us who appreciate his contributions to the defense of our country.

ANYONE who thinks it’s a good idea to usurp our rights is an ASSHOLE of the First Order. I don’t care if they singlehandedly saved the planet from Neptune invaders.
And to falsly use veteran suicides as a vehicle for that charade is beyond disgusting.

  9. bobby Says:

As far as I’m concerned, once someone shows that they are a statist or anti-freedom, then their previous service / life / contributions matter not one bit.

petraeus can suck start a pistol for all I care.

  10. Chas Says:

They want to do more to protect our rights by taking them away from us? The left tells its Orwellian lies like that.
Smells like Astroturf and Bloomberg money. Petraus is a Bilderberger:

I hope you understand that they can only do as they do because they are able to stand behind their Blue Wall and laugh. So many people insist that “Law Enforcement” is “on our side” because they many are Republicans. What they fail to admit is that almost EVERY ONE OF THEM is a GD Rove Republican. No morals. No principles. No scruples. And no honor. Their oath of office – to the Constitution – means no more to them than the similar oaths mean to Betrayus or Kelly. And NOTHING will change for the better until the Praetorian Guard decide they chose the wrong career.

    Happiness is dead pigs.

  12. Kevin P. Says:

So unfortunately, Gen. David Petraeus’s poor judgment is not limited to extra marital affairs and passing confidential information to people who were not authorized to have them.

  13. Blounttruth Says:

As much as I hate what he says, I love the fact that the hero worshipers now have to recoil based on the taught hero worship of those that serve the corporations and bankers. Long past are the days that those of high rank make it there based on merits and not political subservience, and this is a perfect example of why hero’s should be defined by their individual actions and not because they ended up wearing a uniform. The blind partisans always give the benefit of the doubt, and I love it when the reality that what they have been taught is shown as a ruse in general (no pun intended) butt he reality that even those with many stripes on their shirts are nothing more than political pawns to ensure the elite stay protected and their orders carried out.

  14. Standard Mischief Says:

Perhaps Petraeus is positioning himself for a pardon?

  15. Ron W Says:

We are often told that our military is overthere fighting for our freedoms, but here we have a military leader helping those in our government attack our freedoms here.

  16. Huck Says:

I guess that upholding the oath is optional if one is a Officer.

  17. MajMike Says:

Guess the General forgets that adultery is a violation of the UCMJ.

  18. Flight-ER-Doc Says:

It may be because I retired as an O-5 but I’ve found very, very few O-6 and above that are trustworthy…

And sadly, most of them are dead.

  19. batchainpuller Says:

    Their website claims this:
In states with background checks on all handgun sales, 46% fewer women are killed by intimate partners, there are 48% fewer firearms suicides and 48% fewer law on-duty police officers are shot to death.

Then they have a link, but not to a relevant study.

This, if true, it should be an oft heard talking point, but I had never heard it before.

Is there any legitimate research to back up this claim and explains the potential “loopholes” in their stats?

  20. Maxwell Says:

I’ve been muttering a few choice oaths myself, lately.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
