Light blogging

Went to a place where McDonald’s serves spam, rice and soy sauce:

Visited Shark’s Cove for the first time in nearly 40 years:

And the view for most of the week:

There’s a Shark’s Cove pet shop in Sterling, Illinois, but I knew you were in Hawaii when I saw McDonald’s and Spam.

    Have fun, Uncle!

Be sure to enjoy the local food, the roadside food stands selling fish tacos are wonderful.

Zippy’s is a good place for Kamaaina chow.

Shark’s cove is where I did my Basic SCUBA cert.

    Enjoy

Beware of Tiki statues that you find on the beach.

    I know that place…

Have fun. Skip Hanauma Bay. As awesome as it is, the fact you now need to sit through a 45-minute indoc video pretty ruins the mood. They absolutely need to control the place, but the fact they need to control the place means I don’t want to be in the place. Or something.

There are some cool WWII sites up near Ft. Smith if I recall. Old bunkers and whatnot.

Find a local grocery and get the local Poke. That’ll make sense later.

    Have fun.

If you see an amazingly cute couple with 2 incredibly adorable children they’re my cousins.

    HHV… 🙂

Find a breakfast place that serves Loco Moco…

Ride the Atlantis submarine. It’s directly off the beach at Hale Koa. They’ve sunk several aircraft & boats as man-made reefs. It’s pretty cool!

I would be wary of any place selling “fish tacos”…

    Just sayin’…

I did my basic open water SCUBA cert in Shark’s Cove also. Instructor was named Lawlor Reck, I’ll never forget that name.

The biggest thing I remember about Shark’s Cove is coming face to face with a *HUGE* grouper. Probably was at least twice my weight at the time.

  12. MD Person Says:

@Bill Twist: I hear you. That’s just a baby grouper compared to the stuff you’ll see off the Florida Gulf Coast. Anna Maria Island has at least two sized up to 450+ pounds (according to the MOTE aquarium) that like to come up from the depths under the lights and startle overnight fishermen.

My brother (from NY) was fishing a public pier at 0200 when one of got hungry. He said it was like watching a volkswagon beetle lift from the bottom and then suck in everything in sight. It scared kids.

Offshore, the “small ones” are about 200 pounds.

I wish McDonald’s would bring back siricha here.

Dolphin/turtle diving tours off Kaena Point are awesome and they will pick you up from the hotel. Bellows beach is a nice one, but if you like shore break body surfing, go to Sandy’s. On the west side, Koolina has some peaceful lagoons for families with security guards. Would not advise going any further up the west side though, unless you’re with someone who knows the area. If you do know someone, take a hike in the mountains and sample some guava and passion fruit from the streams.

  15. Bill Twist Says:

At the time I weighed about 180, so we’re talking what looked like at least 350+ lbs. I know (and knew) they weren’t dangerous, but it’s unnerving to have a fish that big nose to nose with you.

  16. Beatbox Says:

@Brad, the Tiki statues on the beach are not the problem, it is the ones that are being disturbed in construction sites you need to worry about.

    Tabu!

  17. Brad Says:

@Beatbox, it has been a long time since that episode and all I remembered was the sand.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
