The divorce lawyer market is about to an uptick
So, hackers released data on users of the website Ashley Madison. For those not in the know, it is a site that married people could use to arrange to have affairs. The site boasted 40M users. Which is probably 39,999,000 men and 1,000 women. I kid. I found out about the site because a friend of mine’s wife used it to cheat on him. Who would sign up for anything, much less a site like this, with a work email address?

Also consider that most government email addresses are pretty intuitive: firstname[dot]lastname[at]whateveragency[dot]gov
If you know someone’s name and they work for the government, ‘spoofing’ them would not be difficult.

Why is this no surprise whatever? I would suggest running on the assumption than any site of that or a similar nature exists (secondarily if not primarily) for the purpose of stinging you in some way. It was likely set up by divorce lawyers (and marriage counsellors) from the beginning.
By your post title I figured this was going to be about same sex marriage, or rather, divorce. And you can be sure that divorce lawyers (and marriage counsellors) have been at least part of the push for same sex marriage all along.

They made most of their money by charging to delete your account, which even after paying them were never truly deleted, (so people gave them real info for the billing process on the delete charge). It was and still is a total scam.

I’d imagine people would sign up at work because their personal email is accessible by their significant others. I’m not saying that is either the smart thing to do or even the only other option, but that’s probably why.

I wonder how many of the accounts are legitimate and belong to people with security clearances. One site showed a list of email domains, and a good number of the nuclear carriers were represented. I imagine that there are plenty of people who are now susceptible to blackmail, not to mention adultery charges.

Federal employees caught need counseling, not your judgmental condemnation. They should get bonuses, for doing great, essential work while under such stress. They need (more) paid leave to work through their issues, taxpayer-funded gymnasiums (where they can exercise during work hours).
I think we can all agree the real story is the people calling attention to the issue.
