This is one of the areas where I agree with his policy. But you’re correct, more is better in this case.

Even using the rather lenient criteria for commutation Obama has proposed, over 13000 convicts who applied have failed to qualify for release, while only a few dozen do qualify so far. It gives me the impression that those drug offenders in federal prison may not be the ones anyone would want back in their neighborhoods.
And how much heroin can one sell and still be a “good” drug offender?

It’s purely for the optics.
If he were acting on principle (yeah I know) he’d end Prohibition. No progressive would do such a thing though. Prohibition is far too valuable as a premise for a broad range of wholesale rights violations, government infrastructure and graft.
